Unit Overview
Unit Title
Discovering Organized Work Spaces
Unit Summary
Students will identify their organization needs or downfalls, learn how to identify the type of system that works best for them in their classrooms. Throughout this unit, they will first identify and rank their own organization issues or challenge areas, then explore organization tools and techniques choosing ones they like or feel might be useful to them. Then they will try them in their classroom to evaluate their effectiveness. They will then share their results with peers and collaborate with others to adjust or tweak them as needed so that in the end, they will be able to identify and utilize a system that is organized and maintainable on a weekly basis by each student. At the end of the unit, they will make a video of their organized work space/system to share with others and develop an understanding of the benefits of using them as in time saving and less frustration.

Students will evaluate various forms of organization tools, like bins, colored folders/envelopes, visual/picture icons or strips, etc. as to their possible usefulness individually.
Students will utilize and test organization tools in their desks/classroom work areas and identify which are useful, or not useful for them individually.
Students will collaborate with peers to problem solve possible solutions to any ongoing organization issues and identify 1-2 new possible solutions to try.
Students will use to technology to make a video presentation of their organization systems and present to their peers.

·  Teacher and students set up the systems in their classrooms.
·  Students use for a week and evaluate their effectiveness by using a Sort Ranking Tool and comparing it with classmates. / ·  Students will give a final presentation of their organized work space/system by making a Flip video showing and explaining how they use the system and how it has benefited them overall.
·  Students will share their video with their peers in the resource room and may also share with peers in their regular classrooms.
·  The resource room teacher and regular classroom teacher will confer as to the effectiveness of their chosen systems.
·  Students will use the evaluation rubric assessment to finally evaluate themselves after this process in complete.
Assessment Summary
Students will be evaluated on how well they are using their system by the resource room teacher and their classroom teacher as witnessed by their ability to locate materials easily, keep an orderly workspace at the level of their peers, complete tasks and turn in their work in a timely manner on a weekly basis.
FLIP video presentation: Students will present their organized work space/system using the FLIP video and present to resource room peers and possible regular classroom peers. Their video will show what they use, how they use it and how it has benefited them overall.

Instructional Procedures
Day 1

·  Students will discuss if /when this happens to them and how they feel when that hapends.
·  Students will determine a baseline of their organization challenges by using the Ranking Tool
Give Essential Question for students to start thinking about:
How does using an organization system or organized work space benefit students? / Day 2
·  Introduce and display various organization tools, materials, visual schedules/icons, Velcro strips, bins, folders, colored vinyl pocket folders, envelopes, etc.
·  Teacher will show and tell about each item and explain various ways these can be used in a desk or work space area.
·  Students will be given time to look at, ask questions about, as well as time to discuss items with peers.
·  Younger students may want to collaborate with older students to see what worked for them last year also.
·  Students will go back to their classrooms and look at what space and materials they have to organize. / Day 3
·  Students will choose items they feel best suit their needs, and begin the marking process with available icons (groups of Boardmaker icons), markers, tape, etc. for identification purposes. / Day 4
·  Teacher will meet with each student individually and help them set up their area with the items selected.
·  Student will decide how they want things positioned or situated in their area.
·  Student will begin using system immediately. / Day 5
·  Student will report back with comments on what worked well and what did not.
·  Students will collaborate and problem solve using the SMARTBOARD to set up “T-Chart” for problems and possible solutions.
·  Students will select one solution to try for the next week.
Day 6
·  Students will report back on further results and evaluations of organization tools and how the solutions worked.
·  Students will use for 1 week before being evaluated through a conference with the resource room teacher and classroom teacher.
·  Ongoing monthly checks will begin after teacher conference.
