Want Ads Performance Task

When you apply for a job, where do you look for one? Most often, people start by looking in the newspaper in the Want Ads section. However, with the Internet searching for jobs has become easier. Depending on the type of job you are looking for, the pay can vary. Most often, jobs you have when you are younger are given an hourly rate. For this performance task, your group will be assigned an hourly rate. You will solve different problems involving graphing and direct variation for this performance task.

Hourly Rate of Your Job: ______

1.  How much money would you make at this job if you worked the following hours:

One hour: ______Two hours: ______

Three hours: ______Four hours: ______

Five hours: ______Six hours: ______

Define the following vocabulary words below:

Expression - ______

Equation - ______

Which vocabulary word includes an equal sign? ______

2.  Write a variable EXPRESSION (Hint: Look above to help answer this questionJ) that represents how much you will be paid if you work hours at your selected rate.

3.  If equals the total amount you are paid, write an EQUATION (Hint: Look above to help answer this questionJ) that represents how much you will be paid if you work hours at your selected rate.

4.  Suppose your hourly rate is dollars. Write the equation that represents how much you will be paid,, if you workhours.

5.  With your group, make a table of values containing five coordinate pairs each of which satisfies your equation.

X-Coordinate / Y-Coordinate

6.  Plot the points you found in # 5 on your graph paper. You will need to get the graph paper from my blog. Also, explain in words below what is happening in your graph.

7.  If you work 5 days a week for 8 hours a day, what is the most amount of money you could earn in one week at your job? (Solve this problem mathematically as well as explaining your answer in words.)

8.  Solve your expression you created in problem # 2 when. Explain what your answer means in words.

9.  Suppose you got a raise and made $2.00 more per hour. How do you think your graph would change?

10.  Recall that and vary directly if for some constant is called the constant of proportionality. Fill in the blanks below (using words, not symbols) to make a true statement about this situation.

______varies directly with ______.

11.  What is the constant of proportionality for this performance task? (Look back at your notes to remind you of the definition of the constant of proportionality.)
