General Outcomes: The Foundation Construction Award (FCA) is designed to prepare people for work in their particular occupation.
  • The FCA is modular in format.
  • Each unit covers one group of skills and is tested on what candidates show they can do.
  • Directly related to occupational standards.
  • Designed to be offered on a training site using simulated conditions.
  • The FCA (Building Craft Occupations) is made up of six units.
  • Candidates have to be successful in all six units to gain the award, but each unit they achieve will be recorded.
  • To achieve the full qualification, candidates must pass an externally set and marked knowledge test.
  • Candidates work towards producing a portfolio of evidence of work from learning packs and practical work within the workshops. This evidence is then subject to internal Verification and external verification.
  • National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are designed to be delivered and assessed in the workplace.
  • The FCA has been developed to recognise certain skills and knowledge, which are necessary to work in a particular occupation but which do not cover the full range of competence demanded by NVQs.
  • The FCA directly relates to Level 1 NVQs and can therefore be formally recognised as a progression award.
