Unit I:You’re a History Maker!
The fascinating thing about studying history is not only the events but the people that affected the time in which they lived. As we study Global History, you are going to learn about many people who dramatically changed the world. How did that happen? These historical figures are remembered and written about because they did something exceptional. Something happened in their life that may or may not have been planned, but it inspired them, motivated them, made them passionate about their life, the people around them and the world they lived in. They “made history” and impacted the time period they lived in and the future that was to follow. We learn from their successes and failures.
This year, you will read about many people and characters who go on adventures and journeys. Like them, we are all going on a journey together this year in global studies and it is important that we all feel comfortable with each other as we proceed. That way, we can support each other and grow as individuals and as a learning community.
Before we can truly learn about and appreciate others however, we must first learn about and appreciate ourselves. So here is your chance to think about your life: past, present and future. Remember that no matter how small it may seem, every person’s actions have the potential to make a huge positive or negative difference. What difference do you want to make? Have fun with this assignment and learn more about a very important history-maker—YOU!
Homework 1 -I Am Poem Presentation
Read the following directions on how to create an I Am Poem and choose an object. Then, in a ONE minute presentation, you will read your I Am Poem and share your object with the class.
Object Selection:
We all have a public identity and a private identity. Our public identity is the things we willingly share with others as a way of identifying who we are. This may be as simple as our favorite color or food. Or it may be as complex as our fashion choices. Our private identity reflect things that may be unknown by others, like your culture, hobbies, talents, fears, or goals.
Choose an object that is important, special, or representative of your identity. This may be a drawing, symbols, photos, jewelry, memorabilia, an object given to you by an important person in your life or something that is so important to you that you don’t think you can live without. As you brainstorm, use these suggestions: take a walk around your room and make observations and find some inspiration; ask your family or loved ones for help or ideas; look at pictures or videos of important events in your life and reflect on your life so far and think about what your goals are for the future.
