Learning aims covered / Learning aim A: Select and use tools and work-holding devices for drilling and for turning or milling
Scenario / An employer has asked you to undertake some work with turning/milling and drilling machinery. In preparation, you have been asked to outline and describe the functions of tools and the selection of work-holding devices.
Task 1 / What are the right tools and work holding devices?
Produce a written report to show your understanding of the function, advantages and effectiveness of:
  • two simple and two more complex toolsfor drilling
  • one simple and two more complex work-holding devices for drilling.
Your report should also reference different tooling materials. Include annotated photographs/diagrams to enhance your report.
Next, do the same for oneof the followingmachining techniques:
  • turning
  • milling.

Evidence you must produce for this task / Written report with annotated photographs/diagrams
Criteria covered by this task:
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to: / Unit / Criterion reference
Describe the functions of simple and complex tools used for drilling and turning or milling. / 7 / 2A.P1
Explain why particular tools and work-holding devices are useful for different drilling and turning or milling tasks. / 7 / 2A.M1
Evaluate the effectiveness of tools and work-holding devices for different drilling and turning or milling tasks. / 7 / 2A.D1
Task 2 / Selecting and using tools and work holding devices
Ask a colleague to take photographs of you selecting (from a range) and accurately using:
  • at least two simple and two more complex tools for drilling
  • at least two simple and two more complex tools for turning or milling
  • at least one simple and two more complex work-holding devices for drilling
  • at least one simple and two more complex work-holding devices for turning or milling.
Annotate your photographs with relevant details and ensure that your tutor completes a Learner Observation Record to further evidence your work.
Evidence you must produce for this task /
  • Annotated photographs
  • detailed Learner Observation Records
