Analysis of the teaching material

This is the first period in this unit .Students will learn eight wordsto describe the weather,whichare rainraining(rainy),windy,cloudy,sunny and snowing(snowy),and two city names:Moscow and Boston.Students will do some listening and oral practice talking about the weather by using the target language “How is the weather ?/What’s the weather like?It’s raining (rainy)/windy /cloudy/sunny/snowing(snowy).”

Step 1 .Greetings and Revision

1.Greet the students as usual.

2. Show some pictures to the students to revise the target language in Unit 5. Free talk about the pictures by using the present progressive .

T: What’s he /she doing?

S or SS: He/She is …

What are they doing? They are …

Ask a few pairs to share their conversations.

Step 2 Leading-in and Presentation

Show the picture with a girl running in the rain.

T: What is the girl doing?

SS: She is running.

T: Why is she running? Look at the rain. Oh! It’s raining.

Show the title of the unit and write “Unit 6 It’s raining “on the blackboard.

T: Today we will learn Unit 6 It’s raining .In this class we will learn to talk about the weather; then try to write a weather report(天气预报).

(Show the teaching aims)

Show the pictures to the students, help the students to learn new words and target language.

T: Look at the picture. What is the weather like? Look at the rain .Oh! It’s raining.

Write rain, raining,rainy on the blackboard ask the students to repeat, then help the students to ask and answer:

T: What is(What’s) the weather like ?/How is(How’s) the weather?

SS: I t’s raining/rainy.

Let the students practice asking and answering one by one in groups. Then a few pairs to share their conversations.

The same way to learn the other new words: windy, sunny, cloudy,snowing/snowy.

Step 3 Activities

  1. Show more pictures to help the students to practice asking and answering the target language by using the new words.
  1. Call students’ attention to the pictures in 1a, match the words with the pictures(a-e).
  2. Check the answers.

Step 4 Experience

Boston Moscow

1. Show the pictures to the students and ask:

T:Where is it? Do you know?

SS:Is it …?

Let the students guess. If they can’t guess tell them it’s Boston. The same way to teach Moscow.

2.T: The pictures in 1a tell us the weather in the cities:Beijing,Shanghai,Toronto,Boston and Moscow. Listen to the tape and write these city names in the right boxes.

Play the recording of the first time.Students only listen.

Play the recording again , This time students write these city names in the right boxes.

3. After listening, ask some students to check up the answers.

Step 5 Activities

1. Show the pictures to the students.

T: What’s the weather like in Beijing ?

SS: It’s sunny.

2.Work in pairs to talk about the weather .Then a few pairs come to the blackboard to make conversations.

Step 6 Sublimation

1.Show the picture to the students and ask.

T:What’s she doing ? She is making a weather report .Look at the words bellow.What is she saying? Read these sentences.

2.Get the students to give the missing words according to the weather in 1a and read the weather.Then a few students to make the weather report by looking at the picture.

Hello! Good morning! This is the weather report. Beijing is ______. Shanghai is ______. Toronto is ______. Moscow is ______and Boston is ______.

3. Get the students to look at the map of China. Discuss in groups to write a weather report in China.

5. Ask a few students to stand for their groups to share their weather with the whole class.

Step 7 sum up

1.Help the students to sum up what they learnt in this class.

2.T:Yes, we learnt some words about weather . We also learnt how to talk about the weather . Talking about weather is a useful topic in the western countries. In the west ,people like talking about the weather instead of asking “Have you eaten?”“Where are you going?” It’s more polite.But the weather has changed worse now, Yunnan and Guizhou are still very dry. This is because we human being hurt the nature. , we must do something useful to help protect our environment and our planet. Ok?

Step 7 homework

1. Memorize the spellings of the key words learnt in this class.

2.Oral practice talking about the weather using the target language “How is the weather/What’s the weather like? It’s sunny .”in oral or writing.

3. Listen to the evening weather report after the news, try to write a weather report for your place.(For the top students)

The thought about the processes and methods

First, ask the students to sing a song to encourage them ,then show some pictures to help the students to revise the present progressive , and show a picture with a girl running in the rain to lead to the topic:It’s raining. Next show some pictures to help the students learn new words by asking and answering with“What’s the weather like?/How is the weather ? It’s …” . After the students know the words very well, let the students match the words with the pictures,finish the teaching task of Part 1a. Next show pictures to help the students learn the city names: Boston and Moscow. Telling the students the pictures in 1a is to show the weather in the five big cities:Beijing .Shanghai. Moscow, Toronto and Boston. Play the tape, the students listen and write these city names in the boxes above, finish the teaching task of Part 1b. Then show some pictures to the students to practice asking and answering: “What’s the weather like in Beijing… .”“It’s sunny… .”Practice in pairs and in groups ,ask a few pairs to act for the class. Then a picture with doing a weather report, and a weather report to the students about the five cities ,some words missing .Let the students fill in the missing words and read the weather report. At last ,givethe students a map of China with some city names and some weather signs in it. Divide the whole class into some groups to discuss and finish a weather report for China or the cities. Ask a few groups to share their weather reports with the whole class. Help the students sum up what they learnt in this class. Arrange the homework .
