Unit 5 Alternative Project in lieu of Unit Test
You and your partner will combine resources and talents to present a product to the class that teaches all aspects of Continental Drift Theory, Plate Tectonics, and Volcanoes, their structure and types.
I will outline below, what specifics you need to cover. You, will need to do the research and creative parts of the project. I will also tell you the different components that you must include in your presentation.
- Earth Structure:
Parts of the lithosphere and asthenosphere and what they are composed of.
Diagram all layers of the Earth and their state (solid, liquid).
How Earth’s magnetic field is generated.
Density of oceanic and continental crust.
Age and composition of continental crust (composition expressed as a % based on
rock type)
Rock type found in oceanic crust. Age of ocean crust as compared to continental
crust.
- Driving Forces Behind Plate Tectonics:
Explain in detail what a subduction zone is, and what a spreading zone is.
What are the causes of Plate Motion?
Describe “slab pull” and “ridge push” and their mechanisms.
Tell what “Hot Spots” are and how they evolve.
What are all the convergent boundary types and what features are associated
with each?
Mantle convection and its causes.
What features are produced at convergent and divergent boundaries? Hint: Ch. 11
Where is the newest and oldest ocean crust found?
What is the rate of seafloor spreading and how is it calculated?
What are appropriate units of measure when determining seafloor spreading?
Your project must cover each of the above listed topics in detail. Once you finish with your project, you will have; if done completely and accurately, the best Final Exam Review possible. Other topics will be on the final as well, but for this portion of the final, you will be well prepared.
I will cover some of the topics from above in class so you are not totally on your own. The text book will be a great guide and resource. However, make the project your own, using video clips from other sources, images, music, 3-D models etc. (I will elaborate more later in the document).
Your assignment is to present ALL of the topics listed in # 1 and 2 from above in detail. You must use specific media presentation sources. Each media source will be graded according to how thorough it covers the topic, its level of overall quality and how well it keeps the attention of the audience.
You must have the following media in your presentation:
At least one animated PowerPoint
At least one 3-D model
At least one live action clip. YouTube is an acceptable source.
At least one iMovie
After you have used at least one of these, you may double up on as many as you wish. An example might be doing the four required and two, 3-D models or four iMovies (one required) and three in addition.
You will have class time to do some of the work, but you will need to do other parts of the project out of class. When you are working in class, you will be graded on your productivity. How productive you are is a subjective judgment made on my observations. Make sure you are working to your best effort to receive the kind of grade you expect. You may earn 10 points each classroom work-day. One point will be deducted each time I speak to you about your work performance.
Once you are done with your project, you and your partner will present to the class. A date of completion will be set and at that time all project work in class will cease. You may continue to work outside of class, but when your time to present comes, you need to be at school and ready. If you are absent that day, you will present the day you return.
This assignment will take the place of a test, but will be counted as a test grade. Your daily performance grade will be the daily grade for your project. I am very hopeful that this assignment will give you some learning flexibility and give you a chance to show off some of your talents. My task will to be to provide you with a resource whenever you need one and to give mini lessons on different topics from the list.
