“The Ghost’s Bride”

By Laurence Yep

“Come back right away,” the mother ordered her daughter. “I will,” the girl promised, and she went straight to the next village and did the errand for her mother. But on her way back, the girl began to drag her feet lazily. It was a warm, sunny day, and the girl did not want to go back right away to her chores. So, instead, she sat down on a large, flat stone by a stream and took off her shoes.

At first she splashed her feet happily in the cool water. But then gradually it became harder and harder to wriggle her toes. She thought the water might be too cold so she lifted her feet out to let the sun warm them.

When they still felt stiff, she tried to rub her feet, but she felt nothing. Worse, her ankles and calves were also numb. Worried, she swung her legs from the stone and tried to stand up.

She swayed on her feet, suddenly feeling very tired. She thought about lying down on the stone. It was so pleasant here, and her mean mother worked her too hard. She just needed to rest a moment more.

But in the back of her mind, she felt uneasy. She tried to walk back to her village, but she could barely move her legs. By the time she reached the village gates, her legs were as stiff as sticks.

She collapsed in the dirt, calling for help. The other villagers heard her and carried her to her house. Her anxious mother put her to bed and did everything she could think of, but the girl’s legs became useless. The girl could no longer even walk.

“Did you fall down?” her mother asked.

The girl began to cry, “No.”

Puzzled, her mother shook her head. “Something must have happened. You went straight there and back again?”

Through her tears, the girl mumbled, “You’ll just scold me.”

Her mother stroked her hair just as she had when her daughter was small. “I do scold you. Maybe too much. But that’s because I love you.”

The girl sniffed. “Well, I did take a little rest.”

Her mother kept on stroking her hair. “Where?”

“By the stream near a big flat stone,” the girl said.

The worried mother made her daughter comfortable and then retraced her daughter’s steps. She even found the stone and the stream. Everything seemed normal.

Completely puzzled now, the mother went to a wise old woman in the next village. The old woman knew how to talk to ghosts.

The wise old woman was laying bundles of herbs out to dry in front of her hut. When the mother told her of their troubles, the wise old woman just shook her head and clicked her tongue. “She sat on the lap of a dead man. Now he wants her for his bride.”

“She only sat on a stone,” the mother wondered.

“Long ago a farmer died when he was young. A stone marked his grave, but the stone fell over long ago.” The old woman went on sadly with her chores. “Beneath the stone lies the man, and beneath the stone that man waits.”

But the mother was not about to give up her daughter without a fight. She went back to the stone with bowls of food and a jar of wine for the ghost. Then she burned special paper money and begged the man to leave her daughter alone.

It was late afternoon by the time she started back for home. Suddenly she had the feeling that she wasn’t alone. When the mother looked behind her, she saw two shadows. The second shadow was that of a man.

“Go away. I don’t want a ghost for a son-in-law.” She picked up the nearest stone and threw it at the second shadow, and the shadow disappeared. The mother thought to herself, Maybe I can drive him away from my girl.

So that night the determined mother sat down in a chair and kept watch. In her lap was her big kitchen knife. When the shadow appeared on the wall, she waved the knife over her head. “I told you to go away.”

When the shadow stayed on the wall, the mother struck at the shadow’s head and stepped back. To her horror, the head vanished, but the rest of the shadow remained. She struck at the body and the body disappeared. “Go away, go away.” Frantically she chopped at the shadow’s arms and legs until only the hands and feet were left.

The mother realized that the ghost was only playing with her. The only damage she had done was to her walls. And in the morning, her daughter could not move her arms.

The girl lay stiff and helpless in bed. The tears ran down her cheeks, and she could not even wipe them away. “Don’t let him take me.”

The mother gently wiped the tears away. “Of course not.”

The girl rolled her eyes so she could stare at her mother. “How are you going to stop him?”

The mother bit her lip helplessly. “I don’t know.”

The tears began rolling from the frightened girl’s eyes again. “I don’t want to marry a ghost.”

That gave the determined mother another idea, so she told her daughter to stop. “He wants a bride, but perhaps it doesn’t matter who it is.”

She went back to the wise old woman, and the old woman suggested a woman who had also died young. Together, they got the consent of her parents and then hurriedly prepared a wedding.

They did everything as if both people had been alive. A red chair was carried to the house of the mother of the dead girl. There, the mother of the sick girl put food and a wedding dress on the chair. Then some young men carried the chair out of the village.

When they first set out, the chair had been light because it only carried food and a dress. But it grew heavier and heavier until the chair sagged. The young men had to move slower and they felt like they were carrying a real person.

At the stone, the people acted as they would at a real marriage feast. The women even brought hot water and poured it into a bowl so the ghost could wash his face. When the wedding was over and they were cleaning up, they found the water inside the bowl was dirty.

“He must be pleased,” the wise old woman said. “He’s washed his face like a real person.”

When the mother finally returned home, she found her daughter standing in the doorway to greet her.
