Today we are going to be learning more words that are in our story
Pearl and Wagner: Two Good Friends
Follow along as I read these sentences aloud.
Explain the word’s meaning.
robot: a machine with moving parts that is controlled by a computer
wad: a round lump
trash: something of little use
electricity: energy that makes light, heat, motion, or force
Have students make up a sentence using each of the words in a complete sentence.
Model with each word.
Say: Pearl and Wagner wanted to make a robot. You tell me a
sentence for robot.
Say: She threw a wad of paper. You tell me a sentence for wad.
Say: The trashwas filled with paper. You tell me a sentence for
trash.
Say: The electricity was turned off. You tell me a sentence for
Electricity.
Ask students to identify familiar letter-sounds and word parts: electricity (blend
the syllable: e. lec, tric, i. ty ),robot, (blend syllables: ro, bot ), trash (tr/tr/, a/a/
sh/sh/), wad(w/w/, d/d).
Encourage students using the selection words by asking childrento describe a trash-eating robot they would make that would eat wads of paper. Then ask how they would power a robot.

Put one set of Word Cards (ELL Teaching Guide page 74) in a jar. Ask a volunteer to pick a word out of the jar, read it, and chant the spelling. For example: if the word village is selected , the child will say village, v-i-l-l-a-g-e. The other children repeat the word and spelling. The child with the card says a sentence using the word. The other children repeat the sentence. Continue with children taking turns drawing form the jar until all the Word Cards have been used. Also, make sure each child has had a turn selecting a word.
Reading Comprehension / Have students turn to page 320 in their reading books. Read the titlePearl and Wagner: Two Best Friends Look at the pictures and have students tell what is happening.
Have students read along with you aloud. Make sure all of the students are reading.
Help students to respond to questions using complete sentences when appropriate.
Why does Wagner want to enter the Science Fair? Wagner wants to win a
Prize.
How are Pearl and Wagner different? Pearl is a rabbit, and Wagner is a
Mouse. Pearl has been working hard, but Wagner just keeps talking about
What he wants to do.
Why does Pearl say that Wagner made the robot with her? Possible answer:
Pearl didn’t want Wagner to feel left out.
What does Pearl and Wagner do before they go to the Science Fair? Pearl
stretches the rubber bands. Next, Wagner staples them onto the shoebox
and lid. Then They bring the robot to the gym.
Where does the Science Fair take place? What happens to the robot at the
Science Fair? The Science Fair takes place at the gym. Pearl and Wagner’s
Robot doesn’t work. The rubber bands fly off, and Pearl has to go get more.
Do you think the judge was right not to give Pearl and Wagner a prize?
Why? possible answer: Yes, because their work didn’t work.
Would you like a friend like Wagner? Why or Why not? Children may say
they would like a friend like Wagner because he tries to help Pearl no matter
what. Other would say that they wouldn’t want a friend who does silly
things that get them in trouble.
