Unit 3 Months-Ordinals-Birthdays

Months

STEP 1

Presentation of months

The teacher sticks cards with the names of the months (Months flashcards 1; Months flashcards 2) on the flanel board (poster, pin board, whiteboard) and says the corresponding name of the month. The students repeat the names.

Handout (Jumbled months) – students should rearrange the letters and then write down the names of the months (they can use their English books, dictionaries etc. as well)

STEP 2

The teacher presents and explains the necessary vocabulary (adjectives/ feelings and activities) for the following activity. (Feelings and activities OHT)

Activity "How do you feel in (January)?"

·  The students work together in groups of 2 or 3. Each group gets a copy of a poster (they choose one of the prepared months) blown up to A3 format (Months-January, ...... Months-December).

·  The students also need colour magazines, scissors, glue

·  Then the students look for pictures that are somehow relevant to their chosen months (e.g. January: winter sport activities, snow, etc.), they then cut them out, and assemble them collage-style on their month sheet.

·  The students then write in the left corner of the poster how they feel in the month and in the right corner they write what they do in this month. The completed sheets make a nice wall display.

Follow-up activity: The students could introduce their poster to the class and explain why they chose the pictures.

Ordinals

STEP 1

Exploring ordinal numbers

·  The teacher presents the transparency (Ordinals OHT) and the students should try to find out rules for forming ordinal numbers.

·  The students get a handout ( same as ordinals OHT) and fill the correct ordinals into the appropriate bag. This handout should be put into the students' vocabulary file.

STEP 2 Game

The students play in groups of 10 to 15 students. They count with ordinals. The first student starts with 1st the next student continues with 2nd etc. They need to count fairly fast. Every time when the ordinal would end with a "7th" like in "27th, 37th, etc) they say "sausage" instead of the number. The game can be played by counting forwards and backwards. If a student makes a mistake he/ she drops out.

STEP 3

·  The students get a handout with all cardinal and ordinal numbers and put it into their vocabulary file.

·  The students fill in the correct endings (Ordinals - exercises - handout).

·  The students write the ordinal numbers (words) (Ordinals exercises - handout)

Birthdays

STEP 1: The teacher draws a birthday cake on the board and says, "Today is my birthday. It's the (21st of January)." and writes the date on the board, too.

21st Jan, 2000

The teacher explains how to write the date in English and offers several options. It should also be explained that there is a difference between the written date and what you say.e.g.

·  month - day - year: Jan. 11th, 2000 or Jan. 11, 2000 (You say: " January the eleventh, 2000")

·  day - month - year: 11th Jan., 2000 or 11 Jan., 2000 (You say: " The 11th of January, 2000")

·  11/1/2000

·  11.1.2000

STEP 2 The students practise mini-dialogues in groups of 4: " When is your birthday?" - "My birthday is on (23rd February)." The students can use the handout "ordinals" in their vocabulary files for this exercise.

After this dialogue practice the students write their birthdays on a poster (a list of names needs to be prepared on a poster). This way they create a birthday calendar for the class.

STEP 3

Chain game
Groups of 6 to 8 (or 4 to 6) students. The first student starts with "When is your birthday, (Susan)?" (Susan) responds with "My birthday is on (24th June)." " And when is your birthday, (Mike)?", he asks the next student. (Mike) answers, "Susan's birthday is on (24th June) and my birthday is on (2nd March)". " And when is your birthday, (Bill)?", (Mike) asks. The game continues that way, and the students always repeat all the birthdays they have heard before they were asked. The first player is also the last one.

Birthdays

STEP 1

When are the children’s birthdays? Children’s birthdays OHT

There are two possibilities for this speaking activity.

1.  The teacher asks, "When is Susan's birthday? The students answer, "On the 24th of January."

2.  The teacher asks, "Tell me when these children's birthdays are." The students talk about the children's birthdays "Susan's birthday is on the 24th of January." etc.

3.  The teacher writes some sentences on the board. e.g. "Jenny's birthday is on the 22nd May." "Bill's birthday is on 6th August." etc.

STEP 2

Grammar: possessive “s” (genitive)

·  The students look closely at the sentences the teacher wrote on the board, while talking about the children's birthdays.

·  The students are told to find out a “special rule” for the names in these sentences. “What can you find in each of these sentences?” – “`s”

·  “What does it mean?” – It tells us whose birthday it is.

·  The students get a copy of the handout (Possessive genitive) and look at the examples there together with the teacher.

STEP 3

The teacher asks, “When is your mum’s birthday?“ – (dad, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather and other relatives)

The students write sentences about their family's birthdays into their exercise books.

Follow-up

·  The students interview at least 5 other students in class, take notes about their birthdays and keep these notes in their files.

·  Then the students introduce at least 3 other children in class and say when their birthdays are.

·  During the following days some of the students try to fill in the prepared birthday calendar (list of names prepared by one or two students - poster) of the class. They ask other students (not the students whose birthdays they want to know) for the birthdays of some of the children.(e.g. When is Sandra's birthday? - It' on ...)
