Vocabulary / Define
1.  Mississippians / Pre-historic Native American culture in North America from 800 CE – 1600 CE
2.  Hernando de Soto / The first European explorer to explore Georgia
3.  Conquistador / Spanish explorer wanting the 3 G’s (God, Glory, Gold)
4.  Mercantilism / Economic policy of Great Britain to export more than it imports
5.  Spanish Missions / Churches set by Spain to convert the Native Americans to christianity
6.  Trustee Period / A time when Georgia was governed by a board of Trustees
7.  Proprietary Colony / A colony owned by the King in which he appointed governing officials to rule as the King saw fit.
8.  Charter of 1732 / The document that established Georgia as the 13th colony. Georgia was established for three reasons: Charity, Defense, and Economy
9.  Debtor / A person who owed money and couldn’t pay it back; usually put in jail
10.  Buffer Colony / A colony that served as a defense from Spain
11.  Philanthropy / A form of charity: one of the reasons for establishing Georgia for the “worthy poor”
12.  Indigo / A plant used to make blue dye
13.  Mulberry Trees / Trees used in the production of silk in Georgia
14.  “worthy poor” / Debtors in prison in Great Britain
15.  W.R.I.S.T. crops / Crops produced in Georgia: Wine, rice, indigo, silk, tobacco
16.  Yoeman farmer / A farmer who owned his own land with no slaves. Typically had enough land to sustain his family.
17.  James Oglethorpe / Founding “Father” of Georgia. Helped establish Georgia as a colony.
18.  Yamacraw Bluff / The land given to Oglethorpe by the Yamacraw Indians. That land became the city of Savannah.
19.  Tomochichi / The Chief of the Yamacraw Indians that gave land to Oglethorpe to start the city of Savannah
20. Highland Scots / A group of people from Scotland; known as fierce fighters to help protect the colony of Georgia from the Spanish threat. This group will help defeat the Spanish at the Battle of Bloody Marsh. They settled the city of Darien
21.  Salzburgers / Protestants from Austria who were being persecuted by the Catholics in Austria (now modern day Germany). Oglethorpe invited the Salzburgers to Georgia to help farm the land. They settled in New Ebenezer
22. Malcontents / A group of people who complained about the rules of the Trustees for the colony of Georgia. No slaves, limits on land ownership, and no rum.
23. Battle of Bloody Marsh / Battle where the Highland Scots helped England defeat Spain. This battle will end the Spanish threat to Georgia and create a safe southern boundary for Georgia.
24. Royal colony / Governance of the colony was under the rule of the King of England where he appointed Royal Governors to rule on his behalf
25. King George II / The colony of Georgia is named after this king. He signs the Charter of 1732 to establish the colony of Georgia.
26. John Reynolds / The first Royal Governor of Georgia after the Trustee Period ended. He gave the colonist a form of self-government and created a militia. He was extremely disliked for revoking their rights to government. The colonist complained to the king, and he was removed.
27. Henry Ellis / He was the second Royal Governor of Georgia. He created 8 parishes to help govern the colony of Georgia. He disliked Georgia very much and asked to leave.
28. James Wright / Last Royal Governor of Georgia. He helps Georgia grow economically, increases defense, and expands the colony west into Native American territories. He will be arrested and escape during the Revolutionary War, return when Savannah falls to the British, and escape when the patriots win the war.
29. Mary Musgrove / She was the interpreter for Oglethorpe and Tomochichi.
