Socratic Seminar Purpose

Participants in a Socratic Seminar seek deeper understanding of complex ideas in the text through rigorously thoughtful dialogue. The dialogue is collaborative, with multiple sides working toward a shared understanding. In dialogue, one listens to understand, to make meaning, and to find common ground. This will allow participants to enlarge, strengthen or possibly change their point of view. The seminar will create an open-minded attitude. Students will submit one’s best thinking, expecting that other people’s reflections will help improve it, rather than threaten it. Seminars work toward a common goal, with mutual inquiry and collective knowledge.
