AP BIOLOGY

Unit 2—Cell Structure & Transport

Big Ideas 1, 2, 3, 4

Cell Structure Objectives

1.  Recognize, name, and give functions of various cell organelles/parts.

2.  Explain how the structure of an organelle/cell part relates to its function.

3.  Discuss the advantages of compartmentalization to cell function and illustrate how the cell functions as a system.

4.  Discuss the issue of limited cell size and why it occurs.

5.  Compare and contrast eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells in terms of structure. Describe how these similarities and differences provide evidence for the evolutionary relationship between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

Cell Transport Objectives

6.  Diagram, label, and give the function of each component of the cell membrane in the fluid mosaic model.

7.  List, define, and provide examples of the types of transport that occur across a membrane; identify which membrane structure is used in each type of transport.

8.  Predict the movement of water based on differences in water potential.

Bozeman Videos & Video Resources:

You will watch most Bozeman Videos BEFORE we discuss topics in class. You should take notes while watching these videos. (Suggested style of notes is Cornell Note-taking. See reference sheet.) You will use these notes in conjunction with class notes and book readings. Video resources for this unit are:

Chapter 7 Book Notes: Take additional notes on the provided class notes.

1 Page Diagram: Membrane Proteins

Assignment

·  Draw the proteins located in/on the lipid bilayer.

·  Describe the function of each protein in ONE sentence.

Reminder

Diagrams should be…limited to front side of 1 page, in color, titled and labeled, a different size than the pictures in the book.
