UNIT 2.2 Act 3 – Uphill and Downhill

1. Observe the motion of the cart starting from rest and rolling down the incline without using the motion detector. Above the picture draw a motion map “cartoon” for the motion.

a. Predict the graph describing the motion. Then run the experiment and fill in the actual graph (just for the part when it is rolling downhill).

Prediction:Actual Graph:

b.Explain the slope of actual position graph. What’s happening with the slope and what does it mean about the motion of the cart?

c.Does the velocity of the cart point in the positive or the negative direction? How is this reflected in the slope of your position graph?

2. Observe the motion of the cart slowing after an initial push without using the motion detector. Answer the following questions for the cart while coasting. Above the picture draw a motion map “cartoon” for the motion.

Set up your cart, ramp, and motion detector so it creates a position graph similar to the ones shown. The numbers don’t have to match, just the shape of the curvy portion.

4. After achieving the desired position graph, get teacher initials and answer the questions.

/ (a) Sketch how the ramp and motion detector were set up. Be sure to mark position zero.
(b) Describe how your rolled cart to create this:

(c)Explain the slope of curvy portion of the position graph. What’s happening with the slope and what does it mean about the motion of the cart?
