The purpose of this unit is to give learners a fundamental understanding of Parkinson’s and its impact on the individual. This is a knowledge only unit.

Learning outcome 1: Describe the common signs, symptoms and progression of Parkinson’s

Performance criteria:

1.1 Describe what Parkinson’s is and what causes Parkinson’s to develop / Written/oral evidence in the form of answers to case study and/or question paper
1.2 Identify and describe key motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s / Written/oral evidence in the form of answers to case study and/or question paper, identifying and describing at least 4 each of motor and non-motor symptoms
1.3 Identify the common age(s) of onset of Parkinson’s / Written/oral evidence in the form of answers to case study and/or question paper describing the average age range
1.4 Identify and describe the typical phases and timeframe of the progression of Parkinson’s / Written/oral evidence in the form of answers to a case study and/or question paper outlining the typical phases and timeframe of the progression of Parkinson’s
1.5 Identify a range of conditions within parkinsonism / Written/oral evidence in the form of answers to a case study and/or question paper identifying at least 2 conditions
Learning outcome 2: Explain the common impact of Parkinson’s on the individual and others

3.2 Identify a range of common methods, practices and/or possible interventions used to support individuals to manage their symptoms / Written/oral evidence in the form of answers to a case study and/or question paper listing 3 examples and describing how they may be used
3.3 Describe how an individual’s preferences are taken into account when supporting them to manage their Parkinson’s / Written/oral evidence in the form of written answers to a case study and/or question paper describing howan individual’s preferences are taken into account
3.4 Identify a range of types of local, community and statutory agencies, support services and networks appropriate to the individual with Parkinson’s and describe how to access these / Written/oral evidence in the form of written answers to a case study and/or question paper identifying at least 3 agencies and describing how they may be accessed

Learning outcome 5: Describe a range of communication and cognitive challenges associated with Parkinson’s at different stages; their impact and techniques to deal with them
