COMMUNITYSCHOOLSERVICE COMPONENTS

  • High-Quality Core Instruction and Enhancement: Utilization of challenging, culturally relevant and engaging curriculum;hiring and retention of qualified, supportivestaff; innovative instruction that resonates with the world students live in; safe and comfortable physical setting; individualized instruction andtutoring;academic, service learning, homework and other related group/club opportunities;and advanced placement classes and other post-secondary preparation instruction/activities.
  • Caring Adult Relationships: Students need a support network of caring adult relationships that actively promotes school engagement and academic achievement. Parents and caregivers are the most critical and influential adults to assist students with their learning which includes participation in school activities, assisting with homework and advocating for instruction that meets the individual needs of each student. When parents or caregivers cannot provide this supportive relationship, other adult mentors are recruited ensuring that every student has at least one caring adult relationship.
  • Youth Development Extended Day Programming: Students need a well-rounded education that supplements classroom instruction with opportunities to learn and practice life skills such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. Programs that encompass recreation, arts, culture, sports, service and leadership activities promote development within multiple contexts,expanding and reinforcing learning that strengthens resiliency and makes learning fun.
  • Health and Social Services: Provision of an array of preventive and intervention services and education that address the physical, emotional, social, safety, and economic needs of students and families. Services can include health care (inclusive of dental and vision), mental health counseling, immunizations, child abuse/neglect prevention and intervention, nutrition education, free/reduced cost nutritious meals, housing, energy and transportation assistance, clothing closet, and information and referral to community-sited resources.
  • Applied Service Learning: Opportunities linked to academic instruction and credit for career exploration, workforce training, practicum and community service placements.
  • Parent/Caregiver Education and Engagement: Opportunities and support for parent and caregiver leadership and involvement, parenting education and support, literacy including ESL instruction, and access to needed family support services.
  • Early Childhood: Provision of on-site child care, Head Start, preschool, parent education and support, playgroups and other early childhood educational opportunities.
  • Adult Education: Opportunities for lifelong learning, including education and support in technology, arts, health, workforce, recreation, literacy, basic needs, and other interest areas.
