II. Announcements
· M. Fede announced a survey (more information is needed for secretary)
· R. Vatens-Carr announced the senior exhibition tonight at 6 in Earl Hall.
· Thursday, April 26, Dr. Sheryl Lam will discuss her book Packaging Girlhood from 3-5 in the Student Center Theater with a reception to follow.
· D. Pettigrew reminded us of the faculty-wide research conference on April 21, the movie “Shine” will be shown on April 25, and the Big Read-New Haven will be showing “To Kill a Mockingbird” on the 26th.
· M. Shea announced the English Department Graduate Conference all day Saturday, April 21, from 8:30-4:30.
· N. Henderson reminded us of the talk by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein-Graff on the important strategies for academic success in college on Wed. April 25, from 7:30-8:30 in EN C112

V. Old Business
“Motion to establish an ad hoc committee to review the UCF by-laws”.
· All approved with two abstentions.
· After this motion, the next two motions were tabled until a later time. The new committee will address all By-laws from all subcommittees.

Motion from UWIC regarding acceptance of the FYE proposal
Motion
UCF endorses the TFYEC Pilot Program proposal.
· Discussion ensued about First Year Experience (FYE).
· Concerns were mentioned: the scope and scale of the research project seems daunting to some. Other questions about scope were the need to differentiate between goals, topics, and outcomes. We also need to ensure that we are voting on a pilot program and not a permanent structure. Scale issues are a big concern: who will teach the sections? What will we do with the students who are not in a FYE course? Several were relieved that the FYE writing workshop was moved to June.
· How will resource allocations be determined between New Student Orientation (NSO) and FYE? Will we keep both? (It was mentioned that NSO will happen in smaller sections across the summer and use some of the NSO allocation to fund FYE professional development).
· Other clarifications about the FYE couses: It was explained that the FYE course will be separate from a Gen Ed course. No “double dipping” will be allowed. All FYE courses will be taught by a full-time faculty member, no adjuncts or staff. Need more “lines” if this is the case.
Substitute motion presented: “UCF supports implementation of FYE as proposed in a phased implementation for 6-10 sections in the first year.” This motion was seconded. Discussion ensued about concerns that a specific number will keep the FYE from expanding in the future.
The vote was held and the count was 6-17-4 and the motion does not carry.
Call to question on the original motion: “UCF endorses the TFYEC Pilot Program proposal.”
The vote was held and the count was 27-4-2 and the motion carries.
