Nappy Changing Policy

Nappy Changing Policy

Statement of Intent

No child is excluded from participating in our setting who may, for any reason, not yet be toilet trained and who may still be wearing nappies or equivalent. We work with parents towards toilet training, unless there are medical or other developmental reasons why this may not be appropriate at the time.

We see toilet training as a self-care skill that children have the opportunity to learn with the full support and non-judgemental concern of adults.

Procedures

  • A member of staff is designated to change nappies each session. This designated person oversees the nappy changing for that session.
  • Where possible the key person will change their child’s nappy, however the designated person will change a child who doesn’t have a key person present in the session.
  • The changing area has achanging table to lay young children down if they need to have their bottoms cleaned. The door to the changing area must remain open at all times when a child is being changed.
  • Gloves and aprons are put on before changing starts and the area is prepared.
  • All staff are familiar with the hygiene procedures and carry these out when changing nappies.
  • In addition, key persons ensure that nappy changing is relaxed and a time to promote independence in young children.
  • Key persons ensure that they pull the steps down on the changing table and place their foot onto the lip of the bottom step to keep the steps open. Key persons guide the child up the steps and support them whilst they lay on their backs. The key persons should be visible through the door way at all times whilst changing the child’s nappy.
  • The child’s nappy is changed on the maton the changing table provided. The table is positioned against the left hand wall of the disabled toilets as you enter. To ensure the child’s privacy and dignity is protected, the child should be positioned so their feet are placed at the end of the table, above the steps.
  • Young children are encouraged to take an interest in using the toilet; they may just want to sit on it and talk to a friend who is also using the toilet.
  • They are encouraged to wash their hands and have soap and towels to hand. They should be allowed time for some play as they explore the water and the soap.
  • Key persons are gentle when changing; they avoid pulling faces and making negative comment about ‘nappy contents’.
  • Older children access the toilet when they have the need to and are encouraged to be independent.
  • Nappies and ’pull ups’ are disposed of hygienically. Any soil(faeces) in nappies or pull ups is flushed down the toilet and the nappy or pull up is bagged and put in the bin. Cloth nappies, trainer pants and ordinary pants that have been wet or soiled are rinsed and bagged for the parent to take home.
