Uncle Al’s Travel Tips

From Delta Sky Magazine, June 2004

Before we left on our globe-trotting adventure, my friend and I decided to visit my uncle, Al Batross, who’d been around the world. Since Al is a punster, his advice to us was laced with some real groaners. In his comments (reprinted below), see if you can fill in the missing words and phrases with the name of a real city from the box at the bottom. As Uncle Al would say, Bonn voyage!!

Kids, I know you’re short on dough, so I suggest you try to get a job on a steamer. It won’t be fancy private accommodations, though - on your budget, you’ll be ______up.

You’ll meet a lot of new people on your trip of course. If you run into folks you don’t like, be sure to act ______toward them anyway. Remember - the true test of ______is his ability to turn the other cheek.

When you arrive at a new city, don’t sign up for a tour - you probably ______your limited budget anyway. Instead, you should just ______around and see where your feet take you.

______what to do when traveling by rail? When you’re looking for a place to sit down, always peek inside ______first, to make sure it’s not a crowded or noisy one.

When you get hungry, look for an outdoor café or ______. You won’t be eating any ______food in London, though, so get your fill of collards before you leave! Speaking of London, there’s a museum there with authentic World War II airplanes, where you can sit inside a cockpit or a ______.

After a while, you’ll probably be feeling a few aches and pains. So I’ll give you the address of a real Scandinavian masseuse. You should ______give you a good rubdown to soothe those sore muscles.

A few tips for the Far East: When you’re visiting Japan or Thailand, avoid touching the sacred statues there, guys - nobody like a ______.

For a different kind of experience, try a karaoke bar. A typical karaoke customer will have a lot of enthusiasm but not a lot of talent. So go ahead - don’t be shy! ______rendition of a famous song. If it’s too off-key, you’ll hear ______from the audience. (A lot of those ______personalities from the Japanese corporate world unwind at these places.)

Finally, here are a few tips for when you’re stuck in traffic: First, make sure your seatbelt’s not ______. Also, it’s good to take advantage of ______ride to take in the scenery. Then you can tell your friends back home about every detail of your trip!
