Ukraine and Great Britain

Objectives: To broaden student’s knowledge about two countries, their traditions, culture;

To practice their listening, speaking, reading, writing skills through various creative activities;

To revise the grammar material – the Past Perfect Tense

Equipment: text-books, computers, computer presentations, cards for group work, pictures, maps, small white boards, badges, flags.

Procedure

I.  Greeting.

T: Good morning everybody! Students, please greet our guests, the teachers of English from other schools of our district! Glad to see all of you in good health and mood!

Today we have unusual lesson. It’s a Presentation Lesson and its topic is “Differences and Similarities of Ukraine and Great Britain”. The aim of our lesson is to improve our knowledge, to learn more and broaden our outlook, to watch presentations, to play games.

At previous lesson you were divided into 2 groups. So, today we are going to work in two groups. Besides, each group has got 3 teams. As you see, these are the representatives of Ukraine and those are the representatives of Great Britain. Put on your badges please.

II. Warm-up activities.

T: To my mind this is the day

That the Lord has made

We'll rejoice

And be glad in it.

And the best way is to start our lesson with a prayer

T: Thanks a lot! If you look around the English Study, you will see a lot of maps here. But at today’s lesson we are going to use only the maps of Ukraine and the maps of Great Britain. We have already read many texts in your books and spoken about these 2 countries. But today we are going to learn more about them and compare these two countries.

III. Vocabulary Revision.

Game Show

T: As you know from our English lessons Game Shows are very popular on television in Britain. You know the name of the most popular show for school students in Britain. This quiz show is

T: Each team had a task to prepare definitions of 2 words on topic. Now we are going to guess them. Do you feel like taking part in the famous show?

V. Group work.

5.1 T: We are going to play TIC-TAC Ukraine and Great Britain

The group from Ukraine has to choose pictures of Great Britain and group from Great Britain just the other way round and make up Disjunctive Questions with them. Are you ready? Let’s begin!

P1: Did the cloudless blue sky and the golden wheat fields lend their colors to the National Flag of Ukraine?

Ps: Yes, they did.

P2: Do waterways of Ukraine provide the country with important energy and irrigation resources?

Ps: Yes, they do.

P3: Is Kyiv situated on hilly terrain overlooking the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine?

Ps: No, it isn’t. It is situated in northern Ukraine.

P4: Has Ukrainian musical culture its roots in ancient Slavic music?

Ps: Yes, it has.

P5: Was Kyiv’s Cathedral of Saint Sophia constructed in the 12th century?

Ps: No, it wasn’t. It was constructed in the 11th century.

Ps: No, it isn’t. It is located on the northern bank of the Thames River.

P7: Is the Thames the longest river of Great Britain?

Ps: No, it isn’t. The longest river of Great Britain is the Severn.

Ps: Yes, it is.

P9: Is Saint Paul’s Cathedral one of American architects greatest achievements?

Ps: No, it isn’t. It is one of British architect Sir Christopher Wren’s greatest achievements.

P10: Has Buckingham Palace in London been the official town residence of the British monarch since 1839.

5.2 T: O.K. Well done. Let’s go on. Now we have another kind of Group Work. Each group has 3 teams. You have got texts “Ukraine and Great Britain” (Додаток №2)

But each team has its own task to fill in with markers necessary information in the grid on small white boards on your desks. Like in previous task teams from Ukraine have to look for information about Great Britain and teams from Great Britain about Ukraine. You have few minutes to do this task. (Teams3, 4 have to fill in the missing information: Continent, Washed by; Teams2, 5 - Area, Mountains, Rivers; Teams 1, 6: Climate, Main Holidays.)

T: Time is up. Now in turn give comparative characteristics of the geographical position, climate, and main holidays of both countries using the grids.

VI. Grammar Review.

T: Thanks a lot! It was pleasure for me to listen to you. I’m pleased with you. You really know both countries very well. And now a piece of Grammar – The Past Perfect Tense. When do we use this Tense?

P1: The Past Perfect Tense is used: to describe the actions which happened before a stated time in the past;

VIII. Summing-up

At our lesson we have spoken about the climate a little bit. On your desks you have the Sun and the Cloud. This is like forecast but not the weather. This is your mood forecast. If you have a good mood, show the Sun and if you have a bad mood the Cloud, please.

Ukraine and Great Britain

Both Ukraine and Great Britain lie in Europe, but Ukraine is situated on the European continent and Great Britain is separated from the continent by the English Channel.

In fact Britain is a sea country. It lies on the crossways of the sea routes different parts of the world. Great Britain is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the north-west, by the North sea in the east, and by the Irish sea in the west.

Ukraine is a landlocked country. The major water bodies bordering it are the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov in the south. It lies on the crossways of the land route from the east to the west and from the north to the south.

Ukraine is larger than Great Britain. The area of Great Britain is 24, 500 sq. km, and the area of Ukraine is 603, 700 sq km.

In both countries there are a lot of mountains. In Great Britain there are the Pennines and the Cambrian mountains. In Ukraine we have got the Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains.

There are a lot of rivers in both countries. In Great Britain they are not very long and deep. The Thames is wide and deep enough for large ships in this country. / The Severn

The largest rivers in Ukraine are the Dnieper, the Dniester, and the Southern Bugh. The Dnieper is navigated by large ships.

The climate of Ukraine is temperately continental, being subtropical only on the southern coast of Crimea. The climate of Great Britain is damp and mild because of ocean breezes.

There are many holidays in Ukraine. They are - the New Year's Day, Christmas, All women's day, Easter, the Independence Day, the Victory Day and others.

There are many holidays in Great Britain, too. They are - Christmas, the New Year's Day, Easter, St. Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Halloween an others.

THE MAP OF UKRAINE

The cloudless blue sky and the golden wheat fields lent their colours to the National Flag of Ukraine. The Trident, this ancient symbol of strength and love of freedom, made up the foundation of its State Emblem. These national attributes embody the centuries of struggle of this long-suffering land for freedom, sovereignty and independence.
