UK Professor of Kinestheology and Health Promotion Rob Shapiro

------

Carl Nathe: Thanks Keith. THREE DECADES AGO THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY'S COLLEGES OF EDUCATION AND HEALTH SCIENCES, TOGETHER WITH THE CENTER FOR BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, FORMED A COLLABORATIVE BIODYNAMICS LABORATORY TO STUDY SPORTS INJURIES AND REHABILITATION. BUILDING UPON A RICH HISTORY OF HELPING ATHLETES PREVENT INJURY AND INCREASE PERFORMANCE, THE LAB NOW HAS A NEW LOCATION, EXTENSIVE NEW EQUIPMENT AND CAPACITIES, AND A NEW NAME: THE HUMAN PERFORMANCE LAB.

Rob Shapiro: I came her 30 years ago because I saw potential for collaboration and I'm happy to say that assessment was right. I think this really is a model.

Nathe: THAT'S THE VOICE OF UK PROFESSOR OF KINESTHEOLOGY AND HEALTH PROMOTION, ROB SHAPIRO, WHO ALSO IS AN ASSOCIATE DEAN IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION. SHAPIRO, WHO WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL COLLABORATORS ON THE BIODYNAMICS LAB, IS CO-DIRECTOR OF THE HUMAN PERFORMANCE LAB, TOGETHER WITH CHARLOTTE PETERSON, PROFESSOR AND ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH IN THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES.

Charlotte Peterson: Ten years ago I was invited here to give a seminar in the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine. I was so impressed with the muscle physiologists and the muscle researchers on campus which is what I do, muscle research. [I'm] really interested in how muscles adapt, and what happens when they waste, and how do you rebuild them, and how do muscles respond to exercise.

Nathe: IN THE SUMMER OF 2014 UK'S HUMAN PERFORMANCE LAB OPENED ITS BEAUTIFUL, NEWLY RENOVATED SPACE ON TWO FLOORS OF THE FORMER HOME OF THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY, NOW THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY SCIENCE BUILDING.

Shapiro: We have now additional space for additional projects, we have the ability to run multiple projects at the same time, we have an exam room, we have access to a state-of-the-art classroom. It just opens up a wealth of collaboration possibilities.

Peterson: You need a team, just as in sports in science. If you have a team--people with different levels of expertise in different subjects, if you pool your resources and your energy and your knowledge, you can make so much more progress to really understand an issue.

Nathe: MAKE NO MISTAKE, UK'S HUMAN PERFORMANCE LAB IS ABOUT A LOT MORE THAN HELPING ELITE ATHLETES.

Peterson: In the face of chronic disease as a result of aging, how to help people get back to being optimally functional.

Nathe: TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR ONGOING WORK OR TO PARTICIPATE AS RESEARCH STUDY VOLUNTEERS, VISIT THE WEBSITE UKCLINICALRESEARCH.COM. FOR BOTH OF THESE OUTSTANDING FACULTY MEMBERS AND THEIR COLLEAGUES, THEIR TEACHING AND RESEARCH MOST IMPORTANTLY CONNECTS WITH STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY.

Shapiro: Being able to still work with students is the best part of this job, seeing how the students become successful.

Nathe: UK'S NEW HUMAN PERFORMANCE LAB. SEEING BLUE, I'M CARL NATHE WITH UK AT THE HALF.
