WELCOME TO THE PEARL OF AFRICA- UGANDA

INTRODUCTION

UVDA is a non political, non sectarian, indigenously inspired and oriented voluntary organization geared to work for both local and international PEACE and for the welfare of its members and community through work camps and other social services as volunteers.

Our services are based on the Africa tradition of sharing and humanism, where interests of others always come first before those of oneself.

Through this kind of serving philosophy, participants are helped to grow practically in awareness of the existence of others and to become accustomed to seeing those around them caring personally for others or seeing them being cared for in person.

The service is rendered while working along side local members of the community from where the nature of work projects and their usefulness to the community will give the impression that the society sincerely needs you and your contribution and that you are a complete member of that community.

Besides, it enables you win friends, while working and living with fellow participants from various ethical and racial cultural back grounds and from a number of countries in the world.

WORK AND PEACE PHILOSOPHY

It must be realized that voluntary organization exist in quite a number of countries, the world over, helping towards development of various aspects of community life.

The voluntary work projects mean a great deal more than just a group of people building or repairing something. It provides an opportunity for volunteers to give something more than money or skilled services; they provide means by which people can express a concern for others in a very tangible way through their investment of time and physical energy.

Living in a community of people who need you and your help learning to know and understand the life and aspiration of one another. So that by becoming aware of human needs they could work together in search of practical solutions to the country’s cultural backgrounds only if you understand why others behave and live as they do or may be differently from you.

Therefore, voluntary service gives you that opportunity to work for local and world peace in a personal way by demonstrating commitments to the society of mankind.

WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM YOU

Full and honest participation in activities and frankness in discussions. Willingness to take responsibility and help in the organization administration of the project. Expected also is mature behaviors all round, i.e during work and out in the local community village.

The Association’s present experience in inter-human relations teach the lesson that it is possible for people from differing ethical, racial and educational back grounds to live and work together as members of one family using one communicable language and eating locally prepared food and sharing common accommodation. Some of the deep impressions the programme has left on some participants have included amongst others thinking wider and beyond the confines of one’s area country and people.

BACKGROUND

This Project/Programme was founded by a group of youth members of Buwenge, Kamuli District- Jinja in June 1993 and the idea was hatched born by Mr. Tenywa David who is currently the Chief-Coordinator Busoga Youth Environment protection Association BYEPA.

These youth had realized the importance of protecting the nature of environment after being affected by the community, (Deforestation).

Quite a good number of trees had been cut down for fire wood and charcoal burning for sale and many people were destroying the wet land areas by cultivating them to grow food crops.

Currently there is a cute shortage of rain and food in the area and poverty is at its most rampant.

Since its inception, quite a number of trees have been grown by the community members who have been sensitized by their organization BYEPA.

In 2006, their organization PYEPA realized that there was an out break of epidemic diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, dysentery and an increase in the malaria cases in Buwenge Town Council.

This was as a result of poor waste collection methods by the town council since there was no any truck for the removal of waste to the final disposal sites.

The town had resulted in a stinking place due to the littering and direct leacheting from the solid wastes at the water sources.

BYEPA staff and volunteers from SAFAD – UK carried out a survey of solid waste management in Buwenge Town Council to verify the standards of wastes collected, disposed in the council and how much in a day, week, month and a year.

The BYEPA Volunteers, community members, UVDA Volunteers etc are practically going to participate in the garbage collection in Buwenge Town Council during the work camp to take place in the month of April 2009.

There is great need for MIDTERM /LONG TERM MTV/LTV to work with PYEPA in the waste management Programme in Buwenge Town Council and also in environmental protection to include the wetlands.

More information about the study survey of solid waste management in Buwenge Town Council can be availed to you upon request.

The participants in this work camp shall be given chance to participate in the HIV/AIDS Awareness and testing at Buwenge Hospital.

This project is located very near Lake Victoria, the source of River Nile and Bujagali Falls Jinja and it is possible to visit the SIPI FALLS in Kapchorwa District and Mt. Elgon in Mbale since it is not very far.

Volunteers will be accommodated in a village house at Buwenge Trading Centre.

5. UVDA CODE/ STV05/2009

VENUE : KIRABO CHILDRENS CENTRE KIKANDWA

DATE : FROM MAY 2ND TO 23RD 2009 (3 WEEKS)

ACTIVITY : CONSTRUCTION OF A 3 CLASSROOM BLOCK AND OFFICE,

TREE PLANTING AND WORKING IN SCHOOL GARDEN, HOME OUTREACH OF ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN, HIV/AIDS AWARENESS.

LOCATION : KIKANDWA VILLAGE, KIKYUSA SUB-COUNTY,

BAMUNANIKA COUNTY, LUWERO DISTRICT. ABOUT 50 KM NORTH OF KAMPALA.

PARTICIPATION FEE : EURO 200

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 12

BACKGROUND

Kirabo Children’s Center Day and Boarding school was started by a small group of female teachers who are born from Kikandwa and Kikyusa Villages in conjunction with the local community members in 2006.

The idea was hatched by M/S Sarah Muwanguzi Nabatanzi who had realized that children in that area were exposed to ignorance and diseases as a result of poverty and the average illiteracy rate was about 70% in the area.

The area has several people affected by HIV/AIDS.

A number of orphans over 2500, their parents have died of HIV/AIDS and living with foster parents e.g grand parents who are too old to look after them (70 years and above) and others with friends and well wishers or next of kin.

Kikandwa and Kikyusa villages are amongst those villages which were destroyed by the political war in 1980-1986 causing many people homeless, died and others migrated to big cities e.g Kampala for their safety.

The teaching of the pupil was done from the Church which was the only existing building in the area with only 20 pupils.

In 2007, many people in and out side the area developed interest in their initiatives and amongst those was the grand mother of Sarah Muwanguzi Nabatanzi who is still surviving and is called MRS MUWANGUZI CHRISTINE who donated 50 acres of land to the project.

The community mobilized funds to construct 3 temporary wooden classrooms roofed with corrugated iron sheets.

They currently have 260 pupils from Nursery to primary 5 level.

They are planning to start the construction of a 3 permanent classroom and an office in 2009 once funds are available.

Since most children live with old grand parents, they usually come to school without break fast or any thing to eat during break time or lunch yet some of these children are malnourished and quite a good number of them are attacked by malaria and others have jiggers in their feet. They lack mosquito nets and medicine.

Therefore, the school project has started an agricultural project where they grow food staff on large scale for children’s consumption at school.

They are also planting some trees for environment protection. They also constructed a fish pond but have not yet introduced in fish due to lack of food for fish.

Volunteers are expected to participate in all the mentioned programmes (construction, gardening, tree planting etc).

NB: The nearest Government Hospital is at Wabusana 7 kms away and that’s where the HIV/AIDS Programme will be conducted.
