Questions for ASB Applicants

  1. Please list any previous volunteer work, community service projects, activism, service trips, or related experience that you have participated in.
  1. Many sociological and economical issues contribute to the Isla Vista’s need for volunteers like you. What issues specifically interest you and why?
  1. Working as a team to complete our project will be very important during ASB. What experience do you have working cooperatively with others from diverse backgrounds?
  1. This is a dry trip with the purpose of re-beautifying a neighborhood, learning about social justice issues, and working with peers towards a common cause. Participants must be respectful of ASB policies and guidelines. Why are you choosing a trip full of hard labor rather than a restful vacation?
  1. We will be staying in co-ed group housing with few amenities, with off-site showers and sleeping bags rather than beds. What are your thoughts about these types of living arrangements (skin crawling? Braved worse?) Please answer honestly, as we do not look unfavorably at students who are willing to step outside of their comfort zone to participate in ASB.
  1. What do you expect or hope to gain from Alternative Spring Break in Santa Barbara, CA?
  1. ASB is not a free trip, but we do offer both Fundraising and Scholarship opportunities. Would you be interested in fundraising to bring the total cost of the trip down, as well as your own costs? Do you have any experience in fundraising? If so, please describe that experience.
  1. What makes you uniquely qualified for the trip? Is there anything you would like to add?

Your responses to the following questions will be referenced if you become an ASB participant, but they will not be considered during the selection process.

  1. Are you first aid, CPR, and/or AED certified?
  1. Will you require any special accommodations in order to participate in rigorous physical labor?
  1. Do you have any constructive/carpentry experience?

If you believe you are a good candidate for a $45 scholarship, then please briefly explain your situation in this application including need and inability to participate in group fundraising, or volunteering efforts due to time restrictions. (Note: Please read “Fundraising” in Program & Policies Agreement.)

Please return this application to the Student Volunteer Center office, located in 245 Hahn Student Services, by January 25, 2013 at 5pm. Completed applications may also be sent to .
