REFERENCE: Attach acharacter reference from your Year 13 Dean, School Principal, previous employer or other relevant person (the reference must be in a sealed envelope with the referee’s signature across the seal).

College of Arts First-Year Scholarships
These scholarships were established by the College of Arts at the University of Canterbury in 2006 to recognise and support students commencing undergraduate degree programmes in Arts.
- The scholarships shall be known as the College of Arts First-Year Scholarships.
- The scholarships shall be awarded to students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents intending to begin their first year of an undergraduate degree programme in Arts at the University of Canterbury, and who have completed or are completing a university entrance qualification or are otherwise qualified for admission. The scholarships may be taken up in either the first or second semester provided the scholar is beginning full-time study.
- The scholarships shall be awarded in the following categories:
a)School leavers: Three scholarships to students who will be under 20 years of age when starting university and have not previously enrolled at any tertiary institution (two to students studying in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, one to a student studying in the Faculty of Creative Arts).
b)Adult students: One scholarship to a student who will be over 20 years of age when starting university and who has not enrolled at any university in the past.
c)Maori and Pacific: one scholarship to a student of Maori descent and one scholarship to a student of Pacific descent, who has not previously enrolled at any university.
In each category, no scholarship or only one scholarship may be awarded if in any year there is no candidate or only one candidate of sufficient merit.
4.The scholarships shall be awarded on the following criteria:
a)quality of achievement in the applicant’s NCEA level 2 or 3 results or equivalent qualifications (including Cambridge International and International Baccalaureate) - performance in Arts subjects may be given special weighting; plus
b)evidence of the applicant’s potential, such as the personal statement and school reference requested as part of the application.
5.Each scholarship shall be tenable for one year and be taken up in the year following application.
6.The scholarships shall be awarded by the University Council, on the recommendation of a selection panel comprising:
a)The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Arts);
b)The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences;
c)The Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts;
d)The Academic Manager, College of Arts.
7.The scholarships may not be held with any other scholarship or award that comprises payment of tuition fees.
8.The Council may, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, withdraw a scholarship at any time if satisfied that the student is not diligently pursuing the prescribed course, and the University may require a full or partial refund of the scholarship.
9.Each scholarship will be credited directly to the student’s fees account at the time of enrolment.
10.Applications should be made on the appropriate form which can be obtained from the Scholarships Office and forwarded to the Scholarships Supervisor, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch, not later than 5.00 pm on 19 September in the year prior to the award.
NOTE: The current value of each scholarship is the payment of first-year domestic tuition fees.
