Scope of Practice: BHP Clinic Trainees

Assigned to the Student Health & Wellness Center

This scope of practice applies to Counseling Services Trainees, including doctoral psychology interns and post-doctoral psychology residents, when assigned work location is the BHP Clinic at the Student Health & Wellness Center (SHWC). This scope of practice applies in addition to the established Counseling Services guidelines, policies, procedures, and individual job descriptions for these trainees.

Responsibilities

At the discretion of the Counseling Services Training Director and under the supervision of Counseling Services professional staff, Counseling Services trainees will provide crisis assessment/management in the SHWC BHP Clinic area. Trainees do NOT perform independent 5150 assessments in the SHWC Medical Acute Care. *

In BHP Clinic or third floor conference rooms, Counseling Services Trainees may provide individual and group counseling sessions and run class/workshop training sessions (i.e., Stress Reduction).

Counseling Services Trainees may be included in the monthly behavioral health consultation for Medical and Counseling Staff.

Supervision

Counseling Services Trainees are supervised by an on-duty Licensed Mental Health Professional Staff (i.e., Psychologist and/or Psychiatrist) who must be available for immediate consultation in person or by telephone/pager.

Location

Counseling Services Trainees are allowed in all BHP Clinic areas and SHWC Administrative areas, as appropriate. Permission by the Medical Director to enter SHWC medical clinic areas is contingent upon compliance with infection control requirements (policy 150-08). *

*At the discretion of the Counseling Services Training Director and SHCS Medical Director, Counseling Services Trainees assigned to BHP Clinic at Student Health & Wellness Center are permitted in the Acute Care area when accompanied by a Counseling Services licensed mental health professional in response to a request for acute consultation/5150 assessment. Access is granted subject to prior compliance with infection control requirements.
