Susan D. Horn’s presentation, “Comparative Effectiveness Research Using Practice-Based Evidence: How Nursing Can Lead the Interdisciplinary Team,” describes how practice-based evidence study designs identify treatments associated with better outcomes for specific types of patients and how these studies relate to electronic health records. Horn

is a an adjunct professor in the Department of Medical Informatics at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She is also a senior scientist for the Institute for Clinical Outcomes Research and vice president of research for International Severity Information Systems, Inc. in Utah. Her clinical practice research includes cost-containment practices in health maintenance organizations, ambulatory diabetes care, hospice care, preventing falls, and women’s health care, including the elderly. Horn earned a doctorate in statistics from Stanford in 1968 and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Cornell University in 1964.
