Summer 2014 Upward Bound at USM, located on Gorham Campus

AM Mathematics Teacher– 1 position:

5 weeks:July 1- July 30, 2014 mornings (see schedule for specific days and times)

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree
  2. High school teaching experience and current Maine teaching certification in content area

OR teaching experience at the college or university level

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience teaching low-income and/or first generation college-bound high school students
  2. Currently employed as teacher in a Upward Bound at USM partner school district

OR currently employed by USM to teach college courses in content area

Job Description:

Thirty-three Upward Bound students, all entering the 11th grade will be attending a 5-week residential Summer Academy located on the USM’s Gorham campus. Each student will take two separate courses: one focusing on Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, orAdvanced Math through Pre-Calculus and onefocused on mathematics skills and strategies for the PSAT/SAT tests.

AM Math Teacher will teach Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. Teacher will develop and teach an interactive, student-centered curriculumconsistent with Upward Bound goals and Common Core Standards to be delivered in 9 class blocks (75-minutes) over 5 weeks. Each teacher will teach 2 classes of approximately 6-12 students each day. While teaching classes separately, the Upward Bound math teacherswill consult and collaborate to facilitate aligned learning in mathematics for students.Teacher will be assigned an Upward Bound Guide (college-aged residential staff with some content knowledge) to assist in the classroom and to provide in and out of class support and tutoring for students.

Expectations:

  1. Prepare a course syllabus to be provided to Upward Bound staff by Friday, May 30. This syllabus will include an overview of in-class and independent work required, and will be distributed to students in handbook on first day of the Summer Academy.
  2. Attend staff training on Thursday, June 26 from 9 AM-3 PM.
  3. Actively engage with students, re-teach material as needed, and provide additional subject area tutoring/support during Academic WIN time from 8:30-9:30 AM each day prior to first class block.
  4. Supports and strengthens student progress towards achievement of course and individualized learning goals in content knowledge, mindful of initial and on-going assessment of student learning needs based on PSAT scores, grades and self-identified student learning goals.
  5. Uses formative and summative assessment to further individual student learning and achievement. Prepares and submits written assessments of student learning needs and progress based on Summer Academy participation.
  6. Uses a strength-based, positive support approach to developing supportive relationships with Upward Bound students, mentoring them on academic, personal, social, and college/career concerns and maintains student confidentiality as appropriate.
  7. Performs other tasks as reasonably assigned by supervisor.
