Controller

Trinity Episcopal School has an immediate opening for a full-time Controller. We are currently accepting applications for this position.

Trinity Episcopal School is an independent school with approximately 500 students in kindergarten through eighth grade located in Westlake Hills, close to downtown Austin, Texas.

Role Focus:

The role of the Controller is an integral part of the Business Office responsible for the preparation of financial reports, such as income statements, balance sheets, and analysis of historical and future income and expenses, in addition to other special reports that may be needed. The Controller is responsible for all functions of accounting, audit, and budgeting. The role reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Typical Education and Experience:

The ideal candidate will be a CPA with a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in non-profit accounting, including managerial experience. The candidate must have experience in a similar role. Experience in an Independent School experience is considered a plus. A working knowledge of non-profit accounting is essential.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

GENERAL ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL REPORTING

  1. Responsible for managing the accounting department, ensuring accurate and timely financial information;
  2. Preparing monthly financial statements, including variance analyses;
  3. Supervising student billing, accounts payable, expense reporting, fixed assets accounting, 1099 preparation, sales tax reporting and other general accounting operations;
  4. Reviewing account reconciliations on a monthly or quarterly basis;
  5. Providing support in the hiring and training of accounting department staff when applicable;
  6. Ensuring timely, accurate payment of debt service;
  7. Assisting the CFO in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets, variance reports, and forecasting. Work with other department heads concerning budget performance;
  8. Communicating accounting and other business office policies to employees and monitoring compliance with such policies.

CASH

  1. Supervise all incoming cash receipts and deposits;
  2. Maintaining daily cash balances and review reports from bank daily;
  3. Providing weekly cash reports to CFO.

AUDIT

  1. Managing the school’s annual independent audit.
  2. Taking lead position on Form 990 preparation.
  3. Maintaining permanent office files for all audit schedules prepared by school.

SURVEYS AND BENCHMARK REPORTING

  1. Preparing all periodic surveys and reports for the school’s trade organizations (e.g., NAIS, NBOA and ISAS).
  2. Preparing all similar data as requested.

OTHER

  1. Other miscellaneous tasks as may be assigned in support of the CFO.
  2. Carpool duty.
  3. Assistance with facilitating school events may be required of this position.

This position requires strong interaction with all School divisions and departments that are services by the Business Office.

  • Computer/Software Skills – Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (including Excel, Work and Power Point). The Controller will be required to learn and become proficient in the Veracross software database. Prior experience with Veracross or another similar database specific to private school accounting is a plus.

Other Skills and Abilities:

The Controller needs to have excellent customer service skills.

All prospective employees must be able to clear a background check and will be required to attend “Safeguarding God’s Children” training upon hire.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to listen, physically direct, and speak. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to stand; walk; and may be required to carry file boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
