Project title: Map for sustainable consumption – Bolzano (IT)

Interest Areas:

Promotion of sustainable consumption within the city area of Bolzano

Type of project:

Digital (GIS) and printed map

Short description:

The basic idea behind the map is the one of a digital and printed “shopping guide” for the sustainable consumption. The digital map is consultable in german at and in italian at

All information about the possibilities to buy sustainable products and services has been assembled in a GIS-map (geographic information system). Users can navigate the shops and services by choosing between 6 main catogeries, distinguished by different colours, divided into 21 subcategories. The main categories are direct sales - ethical, organic and fair-trade products - local quality - second hand - repair - rental.

The subcategories allow users to refine their search in order to get exactly the information they are looking for (eg: Where can I buy apples directly from the grower? Where can I get my shoes repaired?).

By clicking on a dot representing the choosen enterprise, a web page containing detailed information will open; on it users find the address and contact data, information about sold products or given services, a picture of the enterprise and eventually information about special offers or similar.

Users also find the directions on how to reach the location by using sustainable transport (i.e. pubblic transport and bycycle lanes). A special tool allows users to calculate the distance, e.g. from the nearest bus stop to the choosen shop.

Enterprises fulfilling one or more of the following criteria can be listed in the map: organic and ecological shops, fair-trade products and shops, artisans with repair service (if service is explicitly stated in the registers of Trade Chamber), sellers of local products and products awarded with the “South-Tyrol-Quality”-Label, agricultural direct sellers like the “Roter Hahn” (red rooster) or similar, sellers of second-hand products, rental services and enterprises awarded with VZS-CTCU's consumer price “Golden Ok”.

The project has been realized by the Verbraucherzentrale Südtirol – Centro Tutela Consumatori Utenti, in collaboration with the Ökoinstut – Ecoistituto Alto Adige thanks to the fundings of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol, Office of Cabinet Affairs.
