Torah - Lev 17:1-16

1 And YHVH spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them; This is the thing which YHVH hath commanded, saying, 3 What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp, 4 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto YHVH before the tabernacle of YHVH; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people: 5 To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they offer in the open field, even that they may bring them unto YHVH, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest, and offer them for peace offerings unto YHVH. 6 And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of YHVH at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and burn the fat for a sweet savor unto YHVH. 7 And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations. 8 And thou shalt say unto them, Whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers which sojourn among you, that offereth a burnt offering or sacrifice, 9 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer it unto YHVH; even that man shall be cut off from among his people. 10 And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. 12 Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. 13 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. 14 For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off. 15 And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean. 16 But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh; then he shall bear his iniquity.

Haftorah - Eze 22:1-19

1 Moreover the word of YHVH came unto me, saying, 2 Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations. 3 Then say thou, Thus saith the AdonaiYHVH, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself. 4 Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries. 5 Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed. 6 Behold, the princes of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood. 7 In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow. 8 Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths. 9 In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness. 10 In thee have they discovered their fathers' nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was set apart for pollution. 11 And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour's wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father's daughter. 12 In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the AdonaiYHVH. 13 Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee. 14 Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I YHVH have spoken it, and will do it. 15 And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee. 16 And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am YHVH. 17 And the word of YHVH came unto me, saying, 18 Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver. 19 Therefore thus saith the AdonaiYHVH; Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem.

Brit - 1Jo 5:1-21

1 Whosoever believeth that Y’shua is the Christ is born of Elohim: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of Elohim, when we love Elohim, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of Elohim, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of Elohim overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Y’shua is the Son of Elohim? 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Y’shua Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of Elohim is greater: for this is the witness of Elohim which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of Elohim hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not Elohim hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that Elohim gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that Elohim hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of Elohim hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of Elohim; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of Elohim. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. 18 We know that whosoever is born of Elohim sinneth not; but he that is begotten of Elohim keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 19 And we know that we are of Elohim, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 20 And we know that the Son of Elohim is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Y’shua Christ. This is the true Elohim, and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Commentary - Year 2 Sabbath 38

Leviticus 17:1-16 - [No Prophet] - Psalm 82 - John 5:1-21

Kislev 21, 5772 / Dec 17, 2011 - Hanukkah begins Tuesday evening.

Asher Yishchat/ Who Slaughters

(V. 1-4) Previous to the Tabernacle, offerings were permitted in various places. With the establishment of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, they were permitted be slaughtered only at the Tabernacle, or its successor – the Temple. It makes no difference how far away one might be from the Temple. Genesis 9:3 allows man to kill animals for food; but, slaughtering for an offering outside of the Temple brings bloodguiltiness.

Prior chapters dealt with tumah (spiritual impurity) from contaminated objects. This chapter deals with tumah from service to alien spirits and demons. (V.7) Sher (demon) comes from the word sh’arah (storm), because they cause turbulence and fear.

The Torah here says, “That ish (man) shall be karat (cut off)”, meaning he shall die prematurely. When the Torah says, “That nephesh (soul) shall be karat (cut off)” (as in Genesis 17:14), it means excision from the life to come; but the wording here means a lesser penalty. Genesis 9:11 says “all basar (flesh) shall never again be karat (cut off) by the water of the flood.” For the most serious offenses, the Torah prescribes a karat that means the sinner dies prematurely, his children die prematurely, and he is denied the world to come.

(V.5) Peace offerings are mentioned because they are eaten by the owner, in the company of others, in a festive manner: these must not be offered at other places.

(V.10-14) Atonement is based upon one life being offered for another – Yeshua’s life for ours. Since life is dependent upon blood, an animal’s life-blood on the Altar is representative of the ultimate atonement. It is a symbol of knowledge and faith in Messiah.

Since Noah’s day, God allows animals to be eaten as food. However, life is to be respected, and the life-blood is to be poured out and covered. One who slaughters to drink blood – which represents consuming life – brings upon himself God’s special attention to shorten his earthly life.

(V.15) Dead animals convey tumah by being touched, but dead birds of a kosher kind convey tumah only by being eaten (excepting kosher animals and birds killed for eating or offering).

The tumah (spiritual impurity) spoken of in this chapter is cleansed through repentance, which is shown by immersion in a mikvah – indicating that one is rising to a new, pure life.

Psalm 82 – God takes His stand

(V.1) God takes His stand in His own congregation; He judges in the midst of the rulers. God’s congregation is to become the judge of the whole earth: “Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?” – 1 Corinthians 6:2.

(V.6) “Isaid, ‘You are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High’.” Righteous judges are referred to as elohim, because they perform God’s work. When certain Jews, doubtlessly from among the judges, sought to judge Yeshua, taking up stones to stone Him, Heanswered them, (John 10:34) “Has it not been written in your Law, 'I said, you are gods'?”

(V.2-4) How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked? Selah. Vindicate the weak and fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and destitute. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked. We need righteous judges in our land. We need righteous judgment in the congregation. We need to learn righteous personal judgment by learning God’s Word.

1 John – Sin unto death

1 John 16-17?says, “If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.” This may refer to karat of the soul: examples are Judas who betrayed Yeshua, and Korah who slandered Moses and God. They lost all opportunity for repentance that would allow them a part in the world to come. Or, it may refer to capital offenses, such as murder and Sabbath desecration, where an earthly court judgment of death is an absolute requirement.

The Torah portion is about offerings to Yahweh and offerings to idols, and the Psalm is about judges of God and judges that are idolatrous – such as those who put money ahead of justice. 1 John ends with “Guard yourselves from idols”, or, as the NLT reads, “Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your hearts.”

A we come to this Hanukkah, may God grant us His Holy Spirit, that we may display His righteousness as the light of the pure oil of the menorah.

Galatians 2 RSTNE

1Then fourteen years after that I went up again to Yahrushalayim with Bar-Nabah, and took Teitus with me also.

2 And I went up by sod-revelation, and communicated to them concerning the Besorah that I proclaim among the nations, 5988 but privately to them who were of tov reputation, lest by any means I should labor, or had labored, in vain.

3 But neither Teitus, who was with me, being an Aramean, was compelled to be circumcised immediately: 5989

4 And because of false Yisraelite brothers who sneaked in, and who came in to secretly spy out our liberty that we have in the Moshiach Y’shua, that they might bring us into slavery:5990

5 To whom we gave no place by yielding in submission to them, no, not even for an hour; that the emet of the Besorah 5991 might remain among you.

6 But of those who were considered to be somewhat important-whatever they were, it makes no difference to me: YHVH accepts no man’s person – for those who seemed to be somewhat important added nothing additional, or new to me:

7 But on the contrary, when they saw that the Besorah of the akrobustia 5992 was committed to me, as was the Besorah of the brit milah to Kepha;

8 For He that worked vigorously in Kepha for his calling as a sholiach to the brit milah, the same One was mighty in me toward the nations:

9 And when Yaakov, Kepha, and Yochanan, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the unmerited favor that was given to me, they gave to me and Bar-Nabah the right hand of chavurah; that we should go to the nations, and they to the brit milah.

10 Only they desired that we should remember the poor; the same mitzvah which I also was eager to do.

11 But when Kepha had come to Antioch, 5993 I withstood him to his face, because he was at fault.

12 For before certain men came from Yaakov, he did eat with the peoples: 5994 but when they had come, he withdrew and separated 5995 himself, fearing them that were from the Yahudim in Yahrushalayim. 5996 5997

13 And the other Yahudim joined with him in his hypocrisy; so that even Bar-Nabah was led astray with their hypocrisy. 5998

14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the emet of the Besorah, 5999 I said to Kepha in front of them all, If you, being a Yahudi in the Light, 6000 live like the Arameans in the darkness, 60016002 and not as do the Yahudim, why do you compel the peoples in darkness to live as do the Yahudim in Light? 6003

15 For we who are from the Yahudi by nature, 6004 are not from the peoples; the sinners,6005 6006 6007

16 Knowing that a man is not ever declared right by the works of law, 6008 but by the emunah in Y’shua ha Moshiach, even we who have believed in Y’shua haMoshiach, that we might be declared tzadik by the emunah in Moshiach, and not by the works of law: 6009 6010 for by works of law shall no flesh ever be declared tzadik. 6011
