FORMS OF POETRY

Two major forms of poetry are lyric poetryandnarrative poetry. Lyric poetryexpresses a vivid impression of an object, person, or moment in time. Lyric poems usually contain musical qualities. “The Tyger” byWilliam
Blake isan exampleofa lyric poem:

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright

In the forests of the night,

What immortal hand or eye

Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

A narrative poemtells a story.Like a shortstory, anarrative poem has asetting,characters, plot, and conflict.These lines from “AnnabelLee” byEdgar Allan Poeare anexample of a narrative poem:

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know.

By the name of Annabel Lee;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door—
