RECREATIONAL OUTDOOR FIRE PERMIT

TWO COPIES SIGNED, ONE FOR THE PERMITEE, ONE FOR THE FILE

This permit is granted for the purpose of conducting any outdoor recreation, ceremonial or cooking fire using approved firewood only. The following items are conditions for approval to conduct this event and you must read each condition:

1.)  An adult shall be in attendance at all times. Do not use gasoline or other flammable liquid to start the fire. You may use charcoal lighting fluid following all safety precautions listed on the container.

2.)  Your recreational fire fuel load cannot be more than 3-feet in diameter, 2-feet in height.

3.)  A shovel with a choice of the following must be on site: charged garden hose capable of reaching at least 25 feet beyond the fire area – OR -, 2 ½ gallon size water buckets with no less than 5 gallons of water, - OR - 2 (two) 2 ½ gallon water fire extinguishers, -OR – an all purpose dry chemical extinguisher with a 4A rating.

4.)  Only seasoned firewood may be used. You cannot use the fire for yard debris, garbage disposal or treated wood. You may not burn cardboard.

5.)  Winds in excess of 15 miles per hour will cause the event to be canceled. EXCEPTION: Fires in an approved masonry fire pit, or steel fire rings with spark arresting covers

6.)  The fire shall be no closer than 10 feet to any property line and must be at least 25 feet from any structure, brush, other combustible materials or trees. 10-feet if an approved spark arresting screen covered fire ring is used or spark arrestor is installed on fire pit chimney.

7.)  The fire shall be totally flooded with water and mixed with the shovel at the close of the event. A fire watch is required for at least one half hour after the fire has been extinguished.

8.)  An official of the City of Mercer Island may revoke this permit at any time.

9.)  You may not leave the fire unattended.

10.)  If the smoke or fly ash bothers neighbors the fire will be required to be extinguished.

11.)  ALWAYS check to see if there is a fire ban in effect. 1-800-323-BURN
