Immediate Action Needed! Urge the Governor to Veto SB 131
Help us stop SB 131 (Beall)! Current law treats victims of child abuse the same, regardless of where the abuse took place and regardless of weather the abuser worked for a public school, a private school or a religious organization. A Controversial bill now on the Governor’s desk will change that. Under SB 131, victims who were abused by employees or volunteers of private or non-profit organizations would be able to sue those organizations even if the statute of limitations was over. Victims who may have been abused in public schools or by government workers, on the other hand, get nothing. As the bill is currently drafted, not only are they prevented from suing the schools, they can’t even sue the actual perpetrator who committed the abuse.
The California Catholic Conference opposes SB 131, and opposes discrimination against victims and private employers. SB 131 is also opposed by a growing coalition of that includes private schools and universities, the California YMCA/YWCA, USA Swim, USA Gymnastics, other religious groups and the La Raza Roundtable de California. ¡Se Solicita Acción Inmediata! Pida al Gobernador que Prohíba el SB 131
¡Ayúdenos a detener el Proyecto de ley SB 131 (Beall)! Las leyes actuales tratan a las víctimas del abuso infantil por igual, independientemente del lugar donde haya ocurrido el abuso e independientemente de si el abusador trabaja para una escuela pública, una escuela privada o una organización religiosa. Un polémico proyecto de ley que va en camino al Gobernador podría cambiarlo todo. Conforme al Proyecto SB 131, las victimas que hayan sufrido de abuso en manos de empleados o voluntarios de alguna organización privada o sin fines de lucro, podría demandar a esas organizaciones aunque ya haya vencido el plazo de prescripción. Por otro lado, las victimas que posiblemente hayan sufrido abusos en las escuelas públicas o en manos de los trabajadores del gobierno, no reciben nada. Así como está redactado este proyecto de ley ahora, no solamente se les impide demandar a la escuela, sino que ni siquiera pueden demandar al mismo perpetuador que cometió el abuso.
La Conferencia Católica de California se opone al Proyecto SB 131, y se opone a la discriminación contra las víctimas y los empleadores privados. El Proyecto SB 131 también se opone a una coalición creciente que incluye a escuelas y universidades privadas, la Police Activity League, La YMCA/YWCA de California, USA Swim, USA Gymastics, y otros grupos religiosos, así como La Raza Roundtable de California. Tips for choosing safe toys for kids
Millions of toys are out there, and hundreds of new ones hit the stores each year. Toys are supposed to be fun and are an important part of any child's development. But each year, scores of kids are treated in hospital emergency departments for toy-related injuries. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when toy-shopping: Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant. Stuffed toys should be washable. Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint. Art materials should say nontoxic. Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they've been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Teaching kids to be safe around unfamiliar animals
We’ve all had the experience of someone else’s dog approaching us. Uncertainty about the dog’s intent can be frightening, especially to young children. The ASPCA website provides parents with advice on teaching their children to read a dog’s body language and to identify signs that it wants to be left alone. The website also helps parents teach their children how to protect themselves from an overexcited pet by demonstrating the basics of dog bite prevention, such as rolling into a ball, protecting hands and face and calling for help, rather than running or screaming if chased by a dog.
