TOTAL MEDIA CONSUMPTION STILL RISING

TV STILL TOPS AS TOTAL EXCEEDS 10 HOURS

With more and more ways to receive media content, people are increasing their consumption of that content. The latest Total Audience Report from Nielsen, covering the first quarter of this year, shows U.S. adults (18+) spending 10 hours, 39 minutes per day consuming media via various devices. That’s a full hour more than the nine hours, 39 minutes reported a year earlier for Q1 of 2015.

Of course, some of that consumption is occurring on more than one device at a time as people increasingly embrace second-screen behaviors. The traditional screen—television—is still far and away the favorite. Average daily adult consumption of live TV slipped only three minutes from a year earlier to four hours, 31 minutes—and watching of time-shifted TV held steady at 33 minutes.

Growth came in the digital media realm. Consumption of media content via tablets rose 63% to 31 minutes and smartphone usage for access (app and Web) grew 60% to one hour, 39 minutes. And while the mobile devices experienced the most growth, people are still accessing content on PCs—with usage up 21% to 58 minutes.

Along with TV and phones, the other big block of time was listening to AM/FM radio, which grew 1% to one hour, 52 minutes. The biggest percentage drop was in DVD viewing, down 11% to eight minutes. No doubt OTT streaming has something to do with that. In fact, Nielsen notes that DVR penetration in TV households and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) reached equilibrium in Q1 of this year, with both in 50% of households. The DVD penetration has been flat for some time, but SVOD has been rising. Nielsen SVP Glenn Enoch calls it “an important milestone” that SVOD—including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime and others—is now equal to DVD penetration.

“Despite growing options, radio and television continue to reach the most users,” the report states. Nielsen finds that 240 million American adults listen to AM/FM radio monthly. TV (live plus time-shifted) is close behind at 226 million. Of the new technologies, smartphones have the greatest reach—used by 191 million adults monthly.

Television and radio are less dependent on the heaviest users to drive their average minutes of use. Nielsen’s Q1 data shows that the top 20% of smartphone video viewers account for 83% of the total usage. It’s even higher for streaming on a PC, with the heaviest 20% of users accounting for 87% of viewing. TV’s top 20% of viewers account for only 52% of viewing and for radio the top 20% do only 48% of the listening.

PROGRAMMATIC TV AD SPEND RISING FAST

Programmatic spending on TV ads is poised to experience explosive growth over the next several years, according to eMarketer’s first forecast on the topic. This year, programmatic TV spendingwill climb 127.8% to $710 million. And that will come after spending tripled last year, albeit from a tiny base.

Throughout the forecast period, through 2018, eMarketer says programmatic will represent a small but growing share of overall TV ad spending. This year, it will account for just 1.0% of the total, with that figure climbing to 6.0% by 2018. By that time, U.S. advertisers will spend $4.43 billion on programmatic TV ads.

Programmatic ad spending on TV lags well behind outlays on digital video. This year,eMarketer predicts that programmatic spending on digital video adswill reach $5.51 billion, representing 56.0% of alldigital video ad spending.

“There are several things driving the growth of programmatic TV, including ease of transactions and the ability to target ads,” said eMarketer forecasting analyst Martín Utreras. “We expect national and local players to take a conservative approach at releasing inventories programmatically, amid fears they could cannibalize their inventory. At the same time, they’re working to become more adept at leveraging data for both ROI measurement and targeting,” he added.

As reported, VW will also pay $2.7 in environmental fines and $2 billion to promote zero-emission vehicles. It all adds up to $14.7 billion……Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s problem with a confusing gear-shift control in Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger models has now been linked to 266 crashes resulting in 68 injuries.
