TV DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES THE HUMOROUS, DRAMATIC, AND UNEXPECTED CONSEQUENCES OF SOCIAL NETWORKING

Halifax, N.S. - October 18, 2011

Hi, we haven’t met before… but why don’t you tell me if you’re single, and interested? Tell me where you live, who all your friends are, and what you like to do in your spare time. Don’t forget to share photos, especially photos of you and your friends doing wild things at parties. Sounds crazy? Well, the truth is, it happens every day, all over the world – on Facebook.

Facebook Follies is a one-hour documentary that takes a look at the unexpected consequences of people sharing their personal information on the world’s most successful social networking site.

The documentary will air on CBC Television’s DocZone on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 9p.m. (9:30 NT) (check local listings).

Facebook Folliesis a fast-paced, provocative look at how social media is fundamentally changing the way people connect and communicate. In the film, viewers will meet people who lost their jobs, their marriages, their dignity or even ended up in jail - all because of their own or someone else’s Facebook posting. But there are also some heart-warming stories, such as the man who reconnected with his lost family after fifty years of searching.

Facebook Follies is written and directed by award-winning Halifax documentary-maker Geoff D’Eon, best known for his work on This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Rick Mercer’s Talking To Americans. The documentary is produced by Edward Peill from Halifax-based Tell Tale Productions Inc.

“It’s really extraordinary what normally sensible people will put up on their Facebook pages,” says D’Eon. “This documentary is going to make people think twice before posting personal information up there, for everyone to see. And for anyone not on Facebook, this film will likely just reaffirm their decision not to sign up.”

Following the broadcast, the documentary can be watched on the CBC website at: and can be followed on Facebook (where else!)
