Turn-based Strategy/Party game

Players: 2-5

Essence Statement:

Bomberman is a quintessential multiplayer game for video game consoles and its accessible pick-up and play gameplay have been entertaining gamers for well over a decade. Now it can be enjoyed without the use of electricity in the tabletop game, Bomberman Board!

Game Overview:

Setting up a game of Bomberman Board is akin to setting up a game of Risk, or any other strategy game. Rules of the match are decided before setup. Players can decide how many wins are needed before the game is over, if players can return from defeat using “revenge” rules, and if after a certain amount of time, sudden death occurs. Players are given “brick plates” to organize on the grid board, formatting the archetypical Bomberman maze. After deciding player order, the game begins.

Players roll two die to determine how many “action points” they have available to them during the turn. These points determine the player’s available options. Because there are two die, the player always has at least two actions to carry out each turn. A point is deducted from the player’s available total for movement, laying bombs, and using gloves. The only action that does not deduct a point is picking up a power-up.

The power-ups themselves increase a player’s ability to lay bombs, automatically have more action points, and with some power-ups, the ability to detonate a bomb during a player’s turn. To find power-ups, players destroy brick panels, while at the same time trying to blow up other players, and avoiding the same fate themselves. But it is still possible for a player to emerge victorious due to luck if they are unfortunate enough to not have as many power-ups as their competitors.

To win a match of Bomberman Board, the objective of the player is to eliminate the competition. To accomplish this, the player needs to attain power-ups, which can both increase their ability to destroy and defend themselves. The player must rely on a combination of their strategic ability and luck to emerge victorious, while also making sure they do not get careless and end up self-destructing.
