Tudor House Attic Room Guide

Role: Opening Tudor House’s atticto members of the public and overseeing the area as a room guide. Running an object handling table (optional).

Responsible to: Rebecca White (Volunteer Coordinator).

Location: Tudor House & Garden

Hours: To be agreed in advance with designated Room Guide. Will require availability during opening hours of the House.

Timescale: There are no deadlines for this role. Registration will stay open until all available roles have been filled.

1.Purpose of role:

The attic room guide will be working independently to open the attic at Tudor House for a short one to two hour periods. They will chat to visitors about the history of the house, and if willing, run an object handling table in the attic. This involves supervising visitors’ handling of historic objects and sharing knowledge about them.They will also remain vigilant to any hazards, warning visitors of low doors, ceilings, and shallow steps etc.

Volunteers will attend training sessions and be willing to develop their own background knowledge of Tudor House as well as using existing notes that are available. They will be helping to increase the accessibility of the house to members of the public and will be making an invaluable contribution to visitors’ enjoyment and experience.

2. Specific tasks:

  • Liaise with Front of House staff to make them aware that you are opening the attic.
  • Engaging with members of the public in a cheerful and enthusiastic fashion.
  • To possibly run object handling in the attic.
  • To lock the attic at the end of the shift and return the key to reception.
  • To make visitors aware of any health and safety hazards, such as the low door and steps coming up into the attic.

3. General role:

  • To act as a representative and ambassador for Arts and Heritage
  • To promote the health and safety of visitors, staff and volunteersby following designated procedures
  • To work within the Volunteer Guidelines and relatedorganisational policies (ie. Child Protection; Grievance &

Disciplinary; Equalities; Access)

4. Relevant qualities:

  • Enthusiastic attitude
  • Reliable and flexible
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly in spoken English.
  • Confident in public speaking and delivery.
  • Experience of working with members of the public is helpful but not essential.
  • An interest in history.

5. DBS Check:

The successful applicant will not require a DBS check for this role.
