Bell Ringer: (5 minutes)

A short practice-quiz reviewing previous day’s lesson: nouns. Located on the ‘master-sheet’, the quiz will consist of ten sentences, in which the student will underscore all occurrences of nouns. The last sentence will contain no nouns, but will contain one subject pronoun.

Set: (3-5 minutes)

TTW review bell-ringer on previous lesson.

TTW listen intently for confusion of pronouns for nouns. This will lead into discussion of the similarity of nouns and pronouns, and how pronouns function as substitutes for nouns in sentences.

TSW review a sample passage (on “ms”) containing no pronouns in order to discover how pronouns are used to avoid repetition and refer back to important nouns in sentences and paragraphs:

“Thomas Jones has a problem. Thomas Jones lost Thomas Jones’s keys. Now Thomas Jones can’t get into Thomas Jones’s house. Thomas Jones is late for Thomas Jones’s job, and Thomas Jones’s work-clothes are in Thomas Jones’s house. Thomas Jones also needs to go to the bathroom. Thomas Jones is in a sad shape.”

TTW state objectives for the day

Instruction (First Objective)(10 minutes)

  • TTW will guide the student through a pronoun chart, outlining singular/plural subjective/ objective pronouns
  • TTW gauge student’s comprehension of case and number.
  • TSW , if necessary, review above through guided cooperative activity.

  • TTW illustrate the importance number and case in connecting pronoun to antecedent.
  • TSW practice, briefly, connecting pronoun to antecedent on “ms”.

Individual exercise/assessment (16 minutes)

  • TSW assess his/her ability to match pronouns to nouns in worksheet.
  • TSW in the event of surplus time, classify pronouns/antecedents on worksheet by case and number.

Closure: (2 minutes)

TTW review pronoun, antecedent, and their correlation with students.

  • What is a pronoun and what is its purpose?
  • Why is an antecedent?
  • What clues match a pronoun to its antecedent?

Assessment:

TSW define pronoun/antecedent

Informal: TTW listen and watch (M) as students define pronoun, antecedent and explain how the two must agree within the context of a sentence/paragraph.

Formal: TTW grade students' worksheets (M) to determine whether students can match pronouns to their antecedents (C). TTW will record these grades in the grade book (D).
