April 18th. Attendance not quite so regular this wk. Monitors again late. A caution given them

April 24th. Mistress unable to come to school in the morning owing to having a bad headache, children were dismissed. I reassembled at two o’clock. Mr. & Mrs. Girling visited. Mr Girling - vicar? Difficult to tell Mr & Mrs apart

April 27th. Mrs Dixon kept her children away on Thursday afternoon as she did not approve of their being punished for using bad language. They came back after being sent for on Friday morning. Mr Hardingham visited Friday afternoon. Mr Hardingham - local farmer, possibly a school manager (like present day governors)

May 4th. Usual school work throughout the week. Attendance more but irregular. Several children in 1st class punished for not doing their home lessons. So had homework then

May 8th. Mr. Girling visited this morning. 56 children in attendance.

May 11th. Several children away this afternoon. Eliza Self obliged to keep at home on account of her mother’s illness. Several excuses brought about home lessons. No. In attendance 47.

May 14th. A good attendance this afternoon (59)

May 15th. Mr & Mrs Girling visited

May 16th. Received the decision of the committee that a weeks holiday would be allowed at Whitsentide and that money allowed for monitors would be 1s 6d instead of 1s.

May 17th. Needlework taken this afternoon instead of lessons as on the timetable.

May 18th. Closed the school for week’s holiday.

May 28th. School re-opened after week’s holiday. Several of the younger children away with water jaw??

June 4th. Four of the children unwell last week returned to school this morning. No. In attendance 50

June 7th. Attendance very irregular this week owing to a fair being held at Southrepps and the Club Feast at Trunch. What was the club feast?

June 10th. Mr. Girling visited this morning.

June 12th. Mr Girling and Mr Girling Jnr visited today.

June 13th. Mr. Wm Primrose visited this morning. Mr Girling in the afternoon. A Cutting (monitor) away with face ache. W Primrose - local landowner & farmer

June 14th. Mr Girling commenced giving catechism lessons to 1st Class

June 19th. Mr Girling and Mr A Primrose visited A Primrose - local farmer

June 22nd. Mr Girling gave a catechism lesson to 1st and 2nd Classes. Commenced giving geography lessons on England on Monday. Wm Gibbons gave a good deal of trouble about his lesson

July 5th. Mr Girling visited

July 6th. Only 41 children present. A good many haymaking. Others gone after yeast (??) Mrs Girling visited.

July 7th. Mr Girling gave a catechism lesson to 1st and 2nd classes. School window broken during the night by a large stone. School work as usual.

July 14th. Throughout the week several children away after hay.

July 20th. Attendance rather better this week. Laura Storey away ill Wednesday & Thursday, returned Friday morning. It should have been noticed June 7th. That Selina

Martins took the place of Flora Larner as monitor, the latter having a wish to give up teaching.

July 25th. L. Storey asked to go home early and several of the other children also, a tea meeting in the village. Monitors kept away Friday morning when they should have come to early lessons.

August 3rd. Slight alterations have been made in the timetable this week as there has been a quarterly examination of the children. Mr & Mrs Girling were present to see lessons carried on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday mornings. Mr Girling Wednesday morning also.

August 10th. A Cutting away with leave on Monday. A very thin attendance Monday afternoon (Bank Holiday) The school treat was held in the Rectory Trunch Wednesday afternoon, though a mistake it is marked in the register as

August 16th. Selina Martins (monitor) away on Thursday morning until 10 o’clock. School closed on Friday for Harvest Holiday.

Sept. 19th. School re-opened after holiday. A thin attendance. Average for week 36.8. Children dismissed at 4.10 Thursday afternoon (mistress unwell) L Storey (monitor) left to go to service.

Sept 23rd. Eliz. Wegg commenced being monitor in place of Laura Storey. Mr Hardingham visited.

Sept. 28th. Mr Girling gave a catechism lesson this morning. A Cutting (monitor) absent without leave.

Oct. 12th. Attendance very thin this week, several children removed to other villages. J Flaxman sent home for rude behaviour.

Oct. 19th. A much better attendance, 5 fresh admissions. Mr Bidwell visited on Thursday

Oct. 26th. Miss Girling visited on Friday morning. Usual lessons throughout the week. E Dixon & H Barwell (Barnett/Barrett) away all week.

Nov. 2nd. Attendance irregular this week. Several of the children picking up acorns. E Self returned after several weeks absence.

Dec. 7th. Attendance very low this week partly owing to bad weather. A A Cutting away Tuesday morning. Mr Girling gave a catechism lesson on Friday.

Dec. 14th. Mrs. Cutting came to say that Amelia (monitor) would leave school at Xmas. S Martins away Friday afternoon.

Dec. 21st. Harriet Riches commenced duties as monitor on Monday

Jan. 31st. End of school year. Mr Bidwell visited on Thursday. Mr Girling gave his usual catechism lesson Friday.

Feb. 7th. School inspected by Mr. Pole Her Majesty’s Inspector. Holiday given in the afternoon.

Feb. 8th. Mr Girling gave a catechism lesson in the morning.

Feb. 15th. Children arranged in their new standards. Routine as usual throughout the week. Elizabeth Wegg absent

Feb. 22nd. J Allard returned after a long absence. Rev Dolphiner (??) & Rev Girling visited on Thursday. Alfred Worts has given a deal of trouble. H Riches left at 3.20 Friday afternoon.

March 1st. Copy of Inspectors Report. “The order is good and with a few exceptions in the fourth class the children passed a very creditable examination” Signed Thomas B Bidwell

April 26th. A holiday given on Wednesday afternoon. Mr & Mrs Girling visited Thursday morning. Mr Girling gave his usual catechism lesson on Friday.

May 3rd. Mr Bidwell and Mr Girling visited on Tuesday, the Misses Girlings Friday morning. M Cutting sent home Thursday afternoon for bad behaviour.

May 10th. Children assembled on Tuesday afternoon at 1.45 dismissed at 4. Attendance rather irregular owing to bad weather.

June 7th. Mr Bidwell visited on Thursday. Attendance very irregular. School closed for Whitsun Holidays.

July 5th. School inspected on Monday afternoon by Mr Mitchell (District Inspector) 59 children present. Report received on Thursday.

July 12th. Usual work throughout the week. H Flaxman & J Allard truanted on Thursday. Mr Girling gave a catechism lesson on Friday

Dec. 13th. Mrs & Miss Bidwell visited on Monday morning. Mrs Girling Tuesday afternoon & Mr Girling Friday. An improvement in attendance.

Dec 20th. Mrs Girling visited Tuesday afternoon and heard 1st & 2nd classes examined in Geography. A quarterly examination held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. School closed for Xmas holiday.

Jan 10th. School reopened Monday morning. Mistress 20 minutes late. Anna Maria Fuller taken in place of Emma Sexton as monitor. Miss Girling visited Tuesday afternoon.

Jan. 31st. Children assembled at 1.45 dismissed at 4 pm. For the purpose of having the room scrubbed. Mr Girling gave a scripture lesson Friday morning. Mrs Girling visited Tuesday afternoon Mr Bidwell Thursday morning.

Feb. 5th. Her Majesty’s Inspector visit. Mr Girling present. Mr Bidwell part of the time. 66 children present. Holiday

On Monday morning is altered by consent of managers to Tuesday afternoon from 3.20 to 3.50 Mr Girling having promised helps with this lesson & being unable to attend on that morning.

Feb. 24th. Copy of Inspector’s Report. “The order is good and the children do their work on the whole fairly but the arithmetic is inaccurate. The Managers should check the registers from time to time and should take care that they are marked in accordance with the accompanying circular (Circular 65) The scholar for whom an honour certificate is claimed does not satisfy the requirements of the Regulations of the 9th. March 7th. F Worts returned to school as Monitor. Yearly attendance return filled up. Mr Girling gave a geography lesson to 2nd class Tuesday afternoon.

April 4th. James Dixon sent home for bad behaviour, allowed to come back after his mother had been visited by school managers. Mr Hardingham visited Tuesday morning

April 10th. School closed on Thursday for a week’s holiday which is to be given at Easter this year instead of Whitsuntide.

April 25th. Attendance irregular this week. A M Fuller away ill one day (Tuesday) Mr Girling visited on Friday.

May 2nd. Mr Bidwell visited on Wed. Highest average this week during past 2 years 60.5 Mrs Girling gave a geography lesson to the 2nd class on Tuesday. Mr Girling a scripture lesson Friday morning.

May 9th. Mr Denny the attendance officer visited on Friday also Mr Bidwell. Mr Girling gave his usual lesson Friday morning.

May 16th. Attendance not so good this week owing to very wet weather. Herbert Harmer has again given a great deal of trouble about home lessons. AM Fuller away Monday afternoon.

May 23rd. Register not marked on Thursday morning as children went to church. Attendance very much decreased

June 6th. Children dismissed at 11.15 on Wednesday morning on account of a wedding at the church. J Allard and H Harmer went to Mundesley instead of coming to school Monday afternoon.

June 12th. A Days holiday given on Friday (Club Feast Day) Mr Denney came on Wednesday. 13 names given to him for low attendance.

June 20th. Mr Girling gave a geography lesson to 2nd class on Tuesday afternoon. School work as usual throughout the week. A M Fuller absent Thursday afternoon. J Allard very troublesome, have been obliged to tell the committee of him.
