Life to Eagle Checklist

This checklist will help assist you in your journey from LifetoEagle rank. This checklist is a summary of the LifetoEagle Guide that details the policies, procedures, and helpful hints used in the Lifeto Eagle process. It should be used in combination with the Guide.

What to Do First

Create a Life to Eagle Notebook. Print out copies of the Life to Eagle Guide, Eagle Scout Rank section of Guide to Advancement, Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, and the Eagle Scout Rank Application and put them in a three ring notebook. Read through the documents to learn what you will need to do.

Meet with an Eagle Coach. Contact the Troop Advancement Chair for a list of the coaches and schedule a meeting to review the process. They are not part of the approval process and can be a great resource to save you time.

Review your Official BSA Records.Ask the troop registrar to print out the official National BSA records and to compare that to your handbook and TroopMaster records to make sure everything is correct.

Age Requirement Eligibility

Complete requirements 1 ‐ 6 before your 18th birthday.You can complete requirements 1-5 in any order after you have passed your Life Scout board of review. Your board of review can take place after your 18th birthday.

Complete Base Requirements

REQUIREMENT 1: Be active in your troop for at least six months after you have achieved the rank of Life Scout.

REQUIREMENT 2: Request 6 letters of recommendation. Demonstrate that you live by the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your daily life by requesting letters of recommendation from the required: Parents or guardians, Religious, Educational, Employer (If any), and two other references. Provide them with a “Confidential Eagle Scout Reference Form” to be mailed to the district.

REQUIREMENT 3: Earn 21 merit badges. 12 are required.

REQUIREMENT 4: Actively serve positions of responsibility for 6 months. While a Life Scout, serve actively for a period of six months in one or more approved Eagle Scout rank positions of responsibility.

REQUIREMENT 5: Complete a Service Project.While a Life Scout, plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school or your community.

Obtain a copy of the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook. You must use the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook to document your project. You may attach additional pages as needed.

Review the Project Workbook with your Eagle Project Coach. They can help you understand how to get through the project successfully.

Select an Organization and Service Project Idea. Identifyan organization to work with and a realistic project. Discuss the project concept with the organization representative you intend to help. Be sure you both understand and come to agreement as to what they need and what you will do.

Review Project Concept with Scoutmaster. They will make sure your project meets the BSA guidelines.

Complete the Contact Information (Page 6). This lists all contact names and numbers.

Complete Project Proposal (Pages 7-10) of the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook. This includes: Project Description and Benefit, Giving Leadership, Materials, Supplies, Tools, Permits and Permissions, Preliminary Cost Estimate, Project Phases, Logistics, Safety Issues, and Further Planning.

Get Project Proposal Approved (Page 10). Review entire proposal and get signatures first from the beneficiary organization representative, The Scoutmaster, the Troop Committee, and the District.

Prepare Project Final Plan (Pages 11 – 17). This section helps you detail out how your project will be carried out and be successful. Work closely with your Eagle Coach.

Carrying out the Project. This includes recruiting volunteers, performing the project, motivating your team, documenting the process, and recording your hours.

Write up Project Report (Pages 19-20) this is where you document what happened and what you learned.

The Application Submittal Process

Write a Statement Of Your Ambitions And Life Purpose. This also includes positions you have had at various organizations along with honors and awards.

Sign your Eagle Scout Application. This is your final step before you schedule your scoutmaster conference.

REQUIREMENT 6: Take part in a Scoutmaster conference after requirements one through five are completed including your Service Project. Your scoutmaster will make sure you are ready for your Board of Review.

Get Signature of Troop Committee Chair. Meet with the troop committee chair who to also review your application package to make sure everything is in order

Submit Application to the Council Service Center. Hand carry your application to the Council office along with your Statement of Ambitions and Life Purpose.

District Scheduling of Board of Review. The district will call you to schedule a board of review. You will need to provide 3 people to serve on your board of review.

REQUIREMENT 7: Successfully Complete A Board Of Review. You will review your scouting history, service project and discuss how you are living out the ideals of being an Eagle Scout.

After the Board of Review

Receiving the Eagle Scout Rank. The Scoutmaster will contact you and deliver the award as soon as it arrives.

The Eagle Court of Honor. Parents or Guardians will then work with the troop to host an Eagle Scout Court of Honor. This is an opportunity for you to be honored for this great accomplishment that only 5% of Scouts achieve.
