Trinity CertTESOL

The Trinity CertTESOL is a qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (also sometimes known as TEFL or TESL). The course is designed for those who have little or no experience of teaching English in the contemporary language classroom, and who would like to gain a recognised qualification. Trinity is one of the principal awarding bodies that validate courses in TESOL. It is accepted by the British Council as an initial qualification in the Council’s teaching operations outside the UK and in their accredited English teaching organisations in the UK. The training equips you with the basic skills and knowledge needed to take up posts as English Language Teachers overseas and gives you a firm foundation for self-evaluation and further professional development.

Loughborough College has a long standing reputation for providing high quality education and training across Leicestershire. Established in 1909 the college is proud to have recently celebrated its centenary.

Loughborough offers a variety of subjects and qualifications ranging from GCSE to degree level courses as well as vocational courses and Apprenticeships. The college welcomes over 11,000 students and is also one of the largest employers in Loughborough with over 900 staff. As a student you can experience a friendly and welcoming environment with supportive staff and tutors.

Loughborough has a great town centre with shops to suit all tastes but is within easy travelling distance of large cities including Leicester and Nottingham. The College is also close to great countryside including Charnwood Forest.

The course is suitable for those with no experience of teaching. However, in order to join the course there are some essential requirements that need to be met:

Minimum age: 18

Qualifications: Level 2 literacy and numeracy qualifications.

Language: The course requires a high level of competence in spoken and written English, whether English is your first, second or a foreign language.

If English is not your first language, you will need to prove your ability, for example by achieving IELTS 7 (C1), Trinity 10 or equivalent.

The Trinity CertTESOL course is a four week, intensive course, consisting of 130 timetabled hours. You will have input sessions for 5 full days a week for 4 weeks. The course combines a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops, led by experienced teachers who will help you prepare for your teaching practice. The course is predominantly practical and afternoons are dedicated to teaching practice. In addition, you will need to allow plenty of time for extra unsupervised private study (e.g. reading, research, the writing of assignments, lesson preparation) both in the evenings and at weekends. The course will give you a firm foundation for self-evaluation and further professional development.

During the course itself, you will work towards passing five modules:

You will complete six hours’ teaching practice with genuine classes, observed and assessed by experienced tutors, as well as eight hours’ observation of experienced teachers teaching genuine learners (four hours of English classes and four hours of other language classes)

You will develop an understanding and ability to put into practice basic TESOL methodologies and approaches and the ability to use a variety of teaching material, as well as an awareness of the key features required of coursebooks and printed materials.

You will also prepare a teaching journal to include lesson plans, self-evaluation and comment by tutors that records your progress.

This module is assessed by a written assignment as well as teaching practice.

You will develop an understanding of the basic relationship between linguistic form (phonological, lexical and syntactic), function and meaning in standard English and the principal concepts and terminology used to describe the structure and use of English. You will also practise teaching the above items in a communicative context and assess the learners’ competence in these areas.

This module is assessed by written tests at the end of the course.

You will prepare a linguistic profile and needs analysis for one learner of English, including teaching a one-to-one lesson. The analysis will focus on the learner’s cultural background, previous language-learning experience and aims, linguistic strengths and weaknesses and the main features of their mother tongue.

This module is assessed by a written assignment.

You will plan, produce, use and evaluate a selection of classroom teaching materials of principally your own design and prepare a written rationale and evaluation describing the following: the materials and the learners for which they are intended, the ways in which they are to be used, ways in which they might be adapted for other learners and the ways in which they were and were not successful when used in teaching practice.

This module is assessed by a Trinity moderator, who will interview you on the last day of the course.

You will receive four hours’ tuition with an oral/aural bias in an unknown foreign language through the medium of that language only, to gain first-hand experience of a learner’s difficulties and to see in practice some of the methods and approaches introduced to them elsewhere.

This module is assessed by a written assignment.

Upon completion of the course, you can apply for teaching posts within the UK and worldwide as the Trinity Cert TESOL is an internationally recognised TESOL qualification (which is also promoted by the British Council). In addition, the Trinity CertTESOL will allow you to progress to the Diploma which will can lead to higher level teaching of TESOL such as EAP ( English for Academic purposes) and ESP (English for Specific Purposes).

The Loughborough College training team are all qualified teaching professionals, with a wealth of experience both here in the UK and abroad. They are recognised by Trinity as trainers for the CertTESOL course and provide a supportive educational atmosphere in which they can share their commitment and enthusiasm for teaching. The trainers will also give a high level of tutor support with formal tutorials giving trainees the opportunity to discuss their progress and ask questions.

The Trinity CertTESOL course costs £1.100, which includes the Trinity examination and moderation fee. If you are offered a place on the course, we will require a £100 non-refundable deposit to secure your place. The remainder of the fees need to be paid two weeks before the start of the course.

Courses start in February, June and July.
