LACES – Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies

Trig/Math Analysis SYLLABUS – 2013-2014

Course Description & Objective

Welcome to Trigonometry and Math Analysis! Trigonometry uses the techniques that students have previously learned from the study of algebra and geometry. The trigonometric functions studied are defined geometrically rather than in terms of algebraic equations. Facility with these functions as well as the ability to prove basic identities regarding them is especially important for students intending to study calculus, more advanced mathematics, physics and other sciences, and engineering in college. The math analysis portion of this course will reinforce conceptual understanding of mathematical reasoning in problem solving. The most significant new content in math analysis is that of limits. The content covered in this year long course will prepare students for Calculus

Classroom Rules & Expectations initials: ____

In addition to following all school rules, please follow the following class procedures and policies!

-Rule #1: Be RESPECTFUL to yourself, others, and this room.

-Rule #2: Be RESPONSIBLE. Arrive on time with all materials, and be on task.

-Rule #3: Be FOCUSED. Put forth your best effort and you will succeed.

-Rule #4: All electronic devices are silent and out of sight.

Classroom Behavior initials: ___

You are here to get smarter and grow as a person. I am here to help you do that. Behavior that contributes to your success and to the classroom learning experience will be recognized and rewarded. Participation is key. Remember – it’s okay to make mistakes; they help us learn! If you are experiencing conflict in class, please let me know by seeing me during study groups or by making an appointment with me. However, if you choose to behave in a way that disrupts class or violates class rules, expect the following:

  • verbal/written warning
  • detention
  • phone call home/ parent or guardian conference
  • referral and/or suspension

Supplies initials: ___

You only need 3 things for this class: A notebook, pencil, and eraser. This class requires an organized notebook dedicated to mathematics. If you choose to use a 3 ring binder, please have space for at least 100 pages. Those of you who choose to use a spiral (I recommend this) will want to make sure it is at least 100 pages. You will also need a pencil for this class (not a pen). Please use a mechanical pencil (to avoid disturbances and wasted time sharpening pencils).

The graphing calculator used by the LACES math department is the TI-89 (Texas Instrument). I recommend getting this calculator this year in order to practice its many functions. This will give you an advantage in AP Calculus and any standardize test you may take such as the SAT 2.

Grade Policy initials: ___ Grading Scale initials:____

Grades are based on a simple point system. Each homework is worth 2 points, tests and quizzeswill range from 20-100 points, and the final will be worth 20% of your overall grade. / Letter Grade / Percentage
A / 90 – 100%
B / 80 – 89.9%
C / 70 – 79.9%
D / 60 – 69.9%
F / x < 59.9%

Homework Policyinitials:____

Homework WILL be assigned nightly to reinforce concepts learned during class time. Homework is to be taken out at the beginning of the following class. Please print clearly – if I cannot read your work, I cannot grade it! If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the homework from either a classmate or Mr. Weintraub.

Study Groupsinitials:____

All students are encouraged to attend study groups. This is the best way to improve understanding, have a good time, and increase your grade.
