ABOUT THIS YEAR’S TRIBUTE: This year’s theme is: Destination ~ Stars & Stripes. We are providing an opportunity for children to write about their parents who are in the military. This year we will be honoring our longtime corporate sponsors. There will be a Women’s History Room and Health Screens. Retired USAF BrigGen Wilma Vaught is making her 5th appearance at the Tribute. We expect this event to be a sell-out, as it has been for her previous appearances, so register early. ■ We will take a photo of the WWII veterans immediately following the opening ceremonies. ■ The NM Veterans Memorial has ongoing exhibits. Hours: Friday through Monday, 0900-1500 hours. Free admission and parking.

CHILDREN’S WRITING PROJECT: Children with a parent in the military are invited to write a 1-page essay on being the child of a military parent. Open to children enrolled in NM elementary schools.

DIRECTIONS & ACCESS TO THE BASE: If you do not have an authorized ID to enter the base, you must be pre-registered and enter via the Gibson Gate, show your driver’s license, auto registration, and proof of insurance. ALL passengers need a photo I.D. Names will be on the Tribute’s registration list at the Gibson gate. NOTE: We cannot guarantee access on base if you have not registered by 17 Feb. The Gibson Gate is east of the Louisiana/Gibson intersection. From I-25, take the Gibson/KAFB East exit, east on Gibson to the gate. From I-40, take the Louisiana South exit to Gibson, left (east) onto Gibson to the gate, east on Gibson to Wyoming, north (left) on Wyoming, past a school on the right and just before the exit at the Wyoming Gate. On your right will be the sign “Mountain View Club.” Turn right (east) on that road to the club (~3 blocks). Due to security procedures and morning rush, please allow an extra ½ hour to get through the gate and to the club. Parking is free.

CONTRIBUTIONS & VOLUNTEERS: The Tribute to Women in the Military is a non-profit, multi-service, organization of volunteers. There are no dues, and the Committee relies on donations it receives from corporate sponsors, individuals and the event fee to cover expenses. We welcome contributions throughout the year. Contributions of $10 or more will be acknowledged in the program brochure, provided we receive your contribution by 17 February. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the IRS, and may be made in honor or in memory of someone; please include that person’s name and rank (if appropriate) and your phone number on the registration form. Committee volunteers are always needed—from all services and ranks, active duty, retired, Reserve/Guard, veteran, civilians, women and men. If you are interested in joining us, please call 505-856-3352 (Marsha Thole) or 505-823-2823 (Mary Cox).

WHAT ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW: Please bring your friends and family, men, too, and invite anyone whom you think would be interested in the Tribute. The Tribute is a time for networking, renewing friendships, learning, and sharing stories. There are no childcare facilities at the club; children under 12 are not allowed. Come early, enjoy the refreshments, browse the exhibits, meet new friends, and be prepared to participate in a wonderful day!

CALLING ALL CHILDREN WHO HAVE A PARENT IN THE MILITARY and who attend the Kirtland AFB elementary schools (Sandia Base, Wherry, and Kirtland) or any other elementary school in New Mexico

If you know of a child who is attending elementary school on Kirtland AFB or elsewhere in New Mexico, please let them and their parents know that the Tribute Committee would like to hear from them. We are having an essay contest in conjunction with the Tribute to Women in the Military’s 25th Anniversary.

The Directions:

In 400 words or less, tell us what you think is the best thing about having a parent in the military, the worst thing about having a parent in the military, and what you have learned being the child of a parent in the military. You may type or handwrite your essay neatly on 1 sheet of paper.

What do you win:

Everyone is a winner! Some of the entries will be read at the 25th Anniversary event of the Tribute to Women in the Military. AND, a gift certificate to McDonald’s will be given to the first 10 children who enter. We will display as many entries as space allows at the Tribute on March 5, 2010, at the Mountain View Club. And some of the entries will be put on our website, with the student’s name and school.

To enter:

Put your name, address, age, grade, the name and phone number of your parents and their rank and branch of service and where stationed, and the name of your school and teacher on your essay and mail it to:
