Braxton County 4-H Camp
Tribal Chief/Sagamore Selection Procedure
The BraxtonCounty 4-H Leaders Association has established a Tribal Chief/Sagamore selection procedure that is available to all eligible members within the county
4-H membership. It includes (a) a Philosophy, (b) a Process, and (c) 4-H Club Leader Involvement.
Philosophy
Being a tribal chief/sagamore should be a challenging role and a rewarding experience. The selection of the tribal chiefs/sagamores for BraxtonCounty 4-H Camp should support 4-H goals. The 4-H youth program in BraxtonCounty should promote meaningful experiences and help develop life skills as a result of the member's active participation and involvement in 4-H program events, volunteer community service, and leadership experiences. Thus, a criteria for consideration as a tribal chief/sagamore is the 4-H club member's commitment to 4-H as they strive to meet their potential as a result of their 4-H participation, 4-H community service involvement, and 4-H leadership experience.
Being selected as a tribal sagamore doesn’t mean that they will automatically be the tribal chief the following year. It is expected that selected tribal chiefs/sagamores will be full-time campers.
Process
To be considered for a tribal sagamore or tribal chief, 4-H club members need to complete a short and simple application form. This will create an applicant pool of 4-H'ers which is initiated by the club members and reviewed by the 4-H club leader prior to the selection at the 4-H Leaders Association meeting immediately prior to 4-H camp.
Chief and Sagamore applications are due to the Extension Office by May 31st. The 4-H club member needs to complete this application form and return it to their club leader for the 4-H leader’s recommendation. Fully completed forms will then be sent to the Extension Office by May 31st.
Club Leader Involvement
Using the review form on the back of the application, the 4-H club leader will make their recommendation by May 31st, based on their perceptions of the 4-H members' ability to meet the criteria for tribal leadership. Club leaders should encourage their 4-H members to apply with the May 31stapplication due date in mind.
