SPECIFICATIONS

ARTIFICIAL GRASS FIELD

  1. GENERAL

1.1  SCOPE OF WORK

Furnish all labour, materials, tools and equipment necessary to install, in place all material as indicated on the drawings and as specified. The installation of all new materials shall be performed in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s written instruction, and in accordance with all approved shop drawings.

The work includes the supply and installation of a 10,702 sq. m. synthetic turf playing field surface, including game lines over a pre-prepared granular base as per drawings and specifications herein. Complete site clean-up is required at completion of the work.

Two purpose suited goal post insert covers are required for times when the goal posts are removed from the playing field. The covers must be able to withstand the force of impact of a football athlete without damage to the cover and without movement of the cover. Shop drawings for the covers must be submitted for review by the Consultant.

1.3 SAMPLES AND SUBMITTALS

1.3.1 The Contractor shall submit the following material with the bid:

A 12 inch x 12 inch minimum sample of the exact synthetic turf and infill system that is specified for this project.

1.3.2 Provide a list of previous installations by the tenderer completed during the last three years, complete with reference contacts and phone numbers.

1.3.3 Provide a list of the skilled workmen to be used on this project, and their relevant experience.

1.3.4 Provide a list of the number of unskilled labours that will be employed for the work, and in what capacity they will be employed. No

substitutions or reductions of the workforce detailed in this tender will be allowed under the contract without prior Consultant approval.

1.3.5 An accurate survey drawing and layout of the specified work, including games lines, is required. Verify field measurements on site prior to shipping materials.

1.3.6 Shop drawings shall be prepared at the scale of the construction documents and contain all pertinent information regarding the installation including game line layouts. These drawings shall be submitted to the University for approval prior to the manufacturing and shipment of materials.

1.3.7 A manufacturer’s maintenance manual, detailing how the artificial grass surface is to be maintained, repaired and cared for, including any equipment required, including painting & marking information.

1.3.8 Obtain all necessary permits, plus payment of all costs involved, including, but not exclusive to, licenses, taxes, duties, and labour documents, if required.

1.3.9 The contractor shall also provide proof in advance of its intent and ability to provide a Manufacturer’s Warranty that guarantees the serviceability and playability of the artificial grass system for its intended uses for a ten (10) year period commencing with the date of Substantial Completion. The Warranty shall be for full performance and shall not be prorated. The Warranty submitted must have the following characteristic:

a. Must provide full coverage for ten (10) years from the date of Substantial Completion.

b. Must warrant that the materials installed meet or exceed the product specifications.

c. Must have a provision to either make a cash refund or repair or replace such portions of the installed materials that are no longer serviceable.

1.3.10 Prior to the approval of a specific artificial turf system, the Manufacturer shall specify in writing that their turf system does not violate any other manufacturer’s patents, patents allowed or patents pending.

1.3.11 Provide a letter with the Tender Submission Form a specification sheet certifying that the products of this section meet or exceed specified requirements.

1.3.12 Provide a Resume of Installation Supervisor who will be present on site during Installation.

1.3.13 Prior to ordering of materials, and within 21 days of notice of being selected, the Contractor shall submit Shop Drawings indicating:

a)  Field Layout

b)  Field Marking Plan and details for the specified sports

c)  Roll/Seaming Layout

d)  Methods of attachment, field openings and perimeter conditions.

1.3.14 The Turf Contractor shall provide a Warranty to the owner that covers defects in the installation workmanship, and further warrant that the installation was done in accordance with both the Manufacturer’s recommendations and any written directives of the Manufacturer’s onsite representative.

1.3.15 All turf warranties shall be non prorated, limited to repair or replacement of the affected areas, at the option of the Manufacturer, and shall include all necessary materials, labour, transportation costs, etc. to complete said repairs. All warranties are contingent on the full payment by the Owner of all pertinent invoices.

1.3.16 The artificial grass field must maintain an ASTM 355 G-max of between 125-150 for the life of the Warranty.

1.3.17. Within twenty-one (21) working days of notice of being the selected Tenderer submit a maintenance manual, including detailed recommended maintenance methods, recommended maintenance schedules, product repair materials, methods of repair and any equipment required to carry out maintenance and repairs. The recommended maintenance methods must describe how to maintain the turf as to ensure that over the lifetime of the company warranty any G-Max testing on the field to ASTM F355 procedure A requirements will yield results that will not exceed the requirements noted herein below.

1.3.18 The Turf Contractor will train the Owner’s facility maintenance staff in the use of the turf Manufacturer’s recommended groomer.

1.4 TESTING REQUIREMENTS

1.4.1 The selected Tenderer must submit the following ASTM testing data. All data must be as provided from an independent testing laboratory. Testing data must be for the system the Tenderer is proposing for installation on this project.

a) ASTM D1335 tuft bind (excluding in-fill).

Must be a minimum of 8 lbs.

b) ASTM D1577 method A for min. yarn denier.

Must be a minimum of 8,800 Dtex.

c) ASTM D5034 grab tear strength

Must be a minimum of 200 lbs.

d) ASTM D2256 yarn braking strength.

Must exceed a breaking strength of 28 lbs/foot.

e) ASTM D418 min. pile height.

Must be a minimum of 2-1/8”

f) ASTM D418 pile face weight.

Must be a minimum of 33 oz./sq. yd.

Provide independent testing results confirming the product specifications.

1.4.2 At three different times the completed installation may be subject to a G- Max test as prescribed by ASTM F355 procedure A within the temperature range proscribed or as modified for testing temperatures not within the optimal range. The initial test will take place just prior Substantial Completion. Re-testing will occur at one year and at two years from Substantial Completion of the work; prior to the expiration of the one (1) year bonded warranty. No re-working or re- conditioning of the field is permitted within 90 days prior to the testing of the field after the first or second year from Substantial Completion.

For the initial test, the average of the test results shall not exceed a result of 125 G and no individual test result shall exceed 130 G. The test results from the testing at the end of year one and year two shall have an average of the test results that shall not exceed a result of 140 G and no individual test result shall exceeding150 G. At no time over the warranty period shall any testing result in an average of the test results being greater than 175 G, nor shall any individual test result exceed 180 G.

1.4.3 Prior to installation, two samples of the synthetic turf material to be installed by the Contractor shall be removed by the Consultant from randomly selected rolls or sheets of material that has been delivered to the site. This material will be sent to an independent lab to verify that it meets the

specifications for the product as prescribed herein. The test results of the samples taken on-site must also meet or exceed the test results that the

Contractor has supplied for the standard product within the Contractor’s tender submission. The cost of this testing will be at the University’s expense.

TO ACCOMMODATE THE REMOVAL OF MATERIAL FOR TESTING, ALL ROLLS DELIVERED MUST BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE THE REMOVAL OF A SAMPLE 900mm DEEP x THE WIDTH OF THE ROLL WITHOUT AFFECTING THE INSTALLATION OF THE PRODUCT. The cost for this testing, except for testing done as a result of the initial samples tested failing to meet the specifications herein, will be at the University’s expense. All subsequent testing costs to verify if any remedial work was successful are to be at the Contractor’s expense. The Contractor must use the same testing agency as used by the University. The Contractor is to allow the Consultant ten (10) working days to complete the testing prior to the installation of the material. Installation can only commence if the material has passed the required testing.

1.4.4 The completed installation will be reviewed for porosity. The porosity rate must be a minimum of 250mm per hour at all test locations. At no time should there be evidence of water ponding at any location on the field during or after any rain event, except for exceptional rain events. The field may pond for a period of 40 minutes after the end of an exceptional rain event. An exceptional rain event is one where 50mm or more or rainfall occurs within one hour.

1.4.5 The completed installation shall be reviewed by the Consultant for planarity. The field surface must not deform under a 4000mm straight edge by more than 8mm, nor shall the field vary from one point on the field to another point 20 metres away in any direction by more than 13mm.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

1.5.1 The Contractor shall employ only qualified, experienced supervisors and technicians skilled in the installation of this system. The Project Superintendent shall have a minimum of five years experience and 25 filled systems.

1.5.2 The Contractor shall also:

a. Not have had a Surety of Bonding Company finish work on any contract within the last five years.

b. Not have been disqualified or barred from performing work for any public owner or other contracting entity.

c. Shall have demonstrable resources to fully service and warrant the systems installed.

d. Execute work in this Section only by a Contractor who has adequate equipment, skilled tradesmen, and materials to perform it expeditiously and to the specifications and who has at least two similar successful installations to that specified over the previous three years. Previous installations must have been installed under the same company ownership and with the same skilled workman positions filled with the personnel proposed for this project.

1.6 BONDS AND WARRANTIES

1.6.1 Provide a company warranty covering products and installation that shall endure for eight years starting from the date of Substantial Completion.

1.6..2 Provide a one year performance Bond for 50% of the value of the Work covering products and installation that shall endure for one year from the date of Substantial Completion. Substantial Completion will not be granted until the G-max requirements have been met. Provide a Labour and Materials Bond for 50% of the value of the Work. Provide insurances as required in the general conditions of the contract. At time of tendering, Undertakings of Surety for a Performance Bond and a Labour and Materials Bond and an Undertaking of Insurance Company, must be presented. A 10% Bid Bond is required.

1.6.3.3 Both the company warranty and the Performance Bond shall state coverage of: quality of workmanship, defects in materials, excessive colour change, non- uniform colour change, excessive loss of porosity, wear not to exceed 10% per year as per ASTM D418, ability to meet the ASTM F355 procedure A requirements as per this specification, and any other feature that is deemed to not be ordinary wear on a synthetic turf playing field surface. The Warranty must specifically state that any and all seams that come apart will be repaired within one month of being notified by the University. The Contractor is responsible for all costs associated with ensuring a successful repair, even under inclement weather conditions.

1.6.4 All Bonds and Warranties, except for the company warranty, are to be provided by an A-rated insurance company licensed to business in the Province of Ontario. All Bonds are to be payable directly to the University.

1.6.5 The Contractor shall promptly replace or repair, to the specifications herein, any areas of the synthetic turf playing field system that are not performing to the standards of the bonds or warranties at the sole expense of the Contractor.

2. PRODUCTS

2. 1 The synthetic turf playing field surface system must be the standard product manufactured by the supplier. The product cannot be altered specifically for this project unless the alteration is required for the product to meet the minimum specifications as prescribed herein, where the standard product has characteristics lower than what is specified. Standard product alterations to meet the minimum specifications herein, where the supplier’s standard product normally exceeds the minimum specifications subscribed herein, will not be accepted.
