Tree Global opened the Mongolia Nursery and Outplanting Operation in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 2011. Tree Global Mongolia (TGM) produces native seedlings for reforestation initiatives across Mongolia. Continued expansion of the facility is expected in order to meet the needs of the country and offset the current rate of deforestation.
Junior Grower’s Role and Responsibilities
The Junior Grower works directly with the TGM Nursery Manager to lead the production of High Performance Trees in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. This requires that the Junior Grower be based in Ulaanbaatar. The Junior Grower reports to the TGM Nursery Manager.
The Junior Grower’s principal responsibility is to assist in the management of the nursery project implementation to successful results. This responsibility encompasses three phases:
  • Nursery management and growing native trees and shrubs
  • Order fulfillment and delivery of nursery plants to out-planting operations
  • Project set-up and expansion
Key responsibilities by phase include:
Nursery management and plant growth
  • Assist the TGMNursery Manager to achieve the annual nursery production plan targets
  • Work within the parameters of the annual budget
  • Implement germination and growing processes under protocols provided by the TGMNursery Manager
  • Coordinate the delivery, organization and stockpiling of production materials and supplies
  • Manage and ensure satisfactory performance of nursery staff on a daily basis
  • Ensure proper care of plant materials during nursery phases
  • Implement quality control programs, as guided by the TGM Nursery Manager
  • Monitor and react quickly to potential problems or threats to the health of the plants
  • Ensure timely adherence to key steps in the plant growth protocol (e.g. transfer of plants from the propagation facility to the growing facility)
  • Document plant growth through measurements and photographs
  • Ensure proper maintenance of the nursery facility and equipment
  • Assist the TGMNursery Manager to maintaininventory and financial records
  • Trouble-shoot as needed to keep the operation running smoothly
  • Train staff in horticulture best management practices
Order fulfillment and delivery of plants to out-planting sites
  • Supervise the order fulfillment process (pulling, staging, loading)
  • Coordinate the transport and delivery of trees to planting sites
  • Assist in the training of staff and supervision of tree planting if required
Project Set-up and Start-up
  • Assist the TGM Nursery Manager to carry out the nursery expansion plan
  • Coordinate the delivery, organization and stockpiling of project materials and equipment
  • Supervision of construction work crews and contractors
  • Assist in determining the project staffing requirements, and then recruitment
  • Conduct staff training

Capability Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of horticultural practices over a variety of species and environments
  • Thorough knowledge of plant propagation and cultivation
  • Experienced in nursery systems, facilities installation and maintenance
  • Excellent personnel management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A degree or equivalent experience in horticulture, agriculture, forestry, nursery management or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience, with demonstrated supervision experience
  • Proven ability to learn new concepts
  • Strong ability to apply concepts to a variety of situations
  • Confident in the use of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word)
