Revised 8/12/03

CHAPERONE RESPONSIBILITIES

General Responsibilities

  • Chaperones will be selected based on the needs of the team. Each chaperone will be assigned certain children, and is expected to monitor and be responsible for those individuals 24 hours per day. The staff may alter these assignments during events based on particular needs.
  • We will have one adult in each hotel room when we travel. To the extent available, male chaperones will be assigned to male athletes. Male chaperones may not enter the room of any female athlete unless accompanied by a USDAF female staff person.
  • All chaperones will be expected to enforce the Code of Conduct, including curfews, cleanliness, and study hall. However unpopular this might be, it is important for the athlete and the team to look and act their best, and we need YOU to make sure this happens!
  • Chaperones are responsible for obtaining and coordinating snacks, drinks, and meals. USDAF does not provide food for the children or chaperones.

Requirements

  • All chaperones must undergo a personal background check. This is also required of USDAF staff and coaches.
  • Drivers must provide proof of a current, valid driver’s license, and if driving their own vehicle, proof of insurance.
  • Please understand that there is a lot of lifting and loading involved. Volunteer for chaperoning/driving only if you are physically able to do this.
  • Be familiar with the Code of Conduct.

Driver Duties

  • Bring, put up and take down the BlazeSports banner.
  • Drive cargo van if assigned or other approved vehicle.
  • Help secure and organize meals (box lunches/cooler or bring fast food if needed).
  • Help load and unload the vehicles.
  • All drivers must also serve as chaperones.

Chaperone Duties:

  • Supervise and monitor children day and night. Maintain contact with and know the whereabouts of athletes assigned to you.
  • Know where the first aid kit is located, and be prepared to treat minor problems, such as cuts and bruises. The administration of medications should be handled by the nurse on duty, or if appropriate, a child’s parents. Serious injuries should be reported to USDAF staff immediately, so that emergency personnel can be contacted.
  • Supervise study hall.
  • Supervise personal hygiene needs (bathroom needs, BURF, showers, toxic travel kit).
  • Help load and unload vehicles.
  • Help obtain and organize snacks and meals.
  • Limit socializing to general areas, NOT IN ROOMS!!
  • Enforce curfews. ALL children must be in their rooms at 10 PM, with lights out at 11 PM.
  • Random room checks day and night are expected.
  • Count and wash uniforms, and bring them to next event (may have to find washer when traveling).
  • Enforce the buddy system when used.
  • Stay in communication with coaches & other chaperones. If walkie-talkies are used, be responsible for staying in communication. Replace batteries when needed or trade in a malfunctioning unit.
  • Check rooms before checkout for damage and forgotten items.
  • Coordinate lost and found items with other chaperones.
