Transportation Dispatcher

Reports To: Transportation Supervisor

Job Summary: The dispatcher assists the Transportation Supervisor in the area of dispatching transportation personnel to ensure safe, timely transportation of district students to school and related school events. This person also assists in the development and maintenance of bus routes and emergencies, as well as adjustments due to crashes, breakdowns, weather, school schedules or other problems that may arise as a result of providing transportation services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•  College degree preferred.

•  Ability to pass Michigan State Police criminal history background check.

•  A high level of computer competency.

•  Demonstrated excellent attendance record is a must.

•  Must possess a high level of skill in communication, both written and verbal.

•  Must possess strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with drivers, other office staff, administration, students, and parents.

•  Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

•  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•  Assist in the development and monitoring of transportation routes to improve safety and efficiency through a thorough knowledge of school district streets and geography.

•  Works with parents, drivers, school administrators, and the general public in resolution of problem situations.

•  Maintains communications with bus drivers via two way radios.

•  Assigns bus drivers, assistants and substitutes to bus runs.

•  Assists in routine office operations.

•  Promotes safety practices for all transportation employees.

•  Assists the Transportation Supervisor in maintaining statistics, time studies and state reports as needed.

•  Updates route books as corrections are needed.

•  Opens the transportation office during the school year.

•  Alerts the Transportation Supervisor and other designated school administrators of possible weather conditions which may affect student transportation.

•  Assigns field trips and forwards appropriate information to the business office for billing of the trip.

•  Is available for emergency situations with special trips over week-end periods.

•  Will perform all other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration.
