- Hello, is everybody here? Welcome to summer school. I’m the head teacher. My name is Mr. Morgan. I know most of you because you were here last year but some of you are new. So tell me about yourselves, your name, where you are from, a bit about your family.

- Hi, I’m Lorraine and I come from Canada. I’m twelve years old and I live on a farm with my Mum and Dad and my two brothers.

- On a farm? That’s interesting. I was born on a farm and my father was a farmer, a sheep farmer. Do you have any sheep on your farm?

- No, no sheep, but we do have horses. They are my favourite animals. I love riding.

- My name is Marion and I’m from Scotland. I’m thirteen and I’m an only child. My Mum and Dad are both teachers. I like living in Scotland because I love the mountains and I can go skiing in the winter. Another reason I like it because Scottish people are so friendly.

- That’s great. Okay, let’s get started!

24, 25, 26...is everybody on the bus now? Good, hello, my name is Kirsty. That’s K-I-R-S-T-Y. I’m your tour guide and I’m going to tell you about our plans for the day. The weather forecast for today is good. The sun is shining and there are no clouds and no rain. So you don’t need your raincoats. In about ten minutes when the driver arrives we are leaving for Stratford, where the famous English writer William Shakespeare was born more than four hundred years ago. The drive to Stratford takes about two hours and we arrive at one o’clock in time for lunch at the Blue Bell restaurant.

After lunch you have the afternoon from two until six to look around the town. You can walk along the river bank and feed the swans or even go shopping. There are plenty of interesting shops on Henley Street which is one of the oldest streets in the town. You can see the house where Shakespeare was born on this street. On the same street there are many pavement cafés and street entertainers. You can sit and drink cola and watch dancers, acrobats and fire eaters. Another interesting place to visit is the place where Shakespeare died. It’s called New Place. Next door to New Place is the museum where you can spend a happy hour or two. At 6:30 we are all meeting at the Courtyard Theatre to see Shakespeare’s famous play Antony and Cleopatra about love and war in ancient Rome and Egypt. After the play we can all meet in the café before we get on the bus. We are leaving no later than 10:30 and we get back to the hotel after midnight. I hope you all enjoy your day at Stratford. Sit back now and enjoy the journey!

- Is everyone here? Good. Let’s get started. Now then, as you all know next week you all are going to London on a year ten school trip. Mrs. Griffiths and I will be coming with you as well as Miss Davis and Mr. Thomas from the Art Department. You must arrive at school no later than 7:30 on Monday morning because the coach leaves at 8 o’clock and we need to make sure that everybody is here.

OK, so the journey to London will take about four hours and we’ll arrive at the hotel at about 12 o’clock. This will give you time to unpack before lunch. There are four beds in each room. Mrs. Griffiths will tell you who you are sharing with. After lunch we are booked to go on the London Eye. For those of you who don’t know that’s a big wheel on the banks of the River Thames. From the top you can see all over London.

On Tuesday, Miss Davis’ group will go to the Tate Modern Art Gallery and Mr. Thomas’ group will go to the British Museum. You can spend the day with searching your art project. Then we’ll go back to the hotel for dinner. There’ll be a trip to the multiplex cinema in the evening where there’s a choice of ten films.

Wednesday is a shopping day. In the morning we’ll go to Oxford Street.

In the afternoon we’ll go to Covent Garden market. You can see some amazing street entertainment there as well as lots of interesting stalls selling clothes, crafts and antiques. On Wednesday evening we’ll stay in Covent Garden to see The Lion King.

On Thursday, we’ll go to the Natural History Museum before returning to the hotel and getting on the coach for the return journey. Please, ask your parents to pick you up at the school gates. We’ll be back at 10 o’clock. That’s all for now. See you all on Monday.

- Come in and sit down, Jamie. We need to discuss what subjects you are going to take next year. Let you know Math, English and Science are compulsory, you have to take those, but have you decided on your other options?

- Not really, Mr. Jones. I haven’t quite made up my mind yet. I have to decide which modern language I should take.

- You are still having problems with French. I see your marks are rather low this term.

- Yes, I used to really enjoy learning French. It was easy at first when we were learning basic phrases and vocabulary, but now I find it too difficult. I’d rather learn Spanish next year if that’s possible.

- I think that should be OK, but you’ll have to speak to Mrs. Sanchez about it. You’ll find her in the staff room at lunch time. Now then you wanted to take Business Studies, didn’t you?

- Yes, I did. But I think it clashes with History and I’d prefer to take History because that’s what I want to study at University.

- Any particular reason?

- My Dad did a History degree at Nottingham University and I suppose he is in code to me to do the same. He teaches at Shelton College now.

- Really? I didn’t know that. I thought your father was an artist.

- No, my Mum is an artist. She used to teach as well, but she doesn’t any longer. She runs a small gallery in Birmingham.

- I see, so that’s where you get your artistic talent. You’ll be taking Art next year, I expect.

- Oh, yes. It’s one of my favourite subjects. I got ninety five per cent for my project last term. So I’ll be stupid not to take Art.

- Absolutely. Mr. Marshall says you are one of the best artists in the school.

- That’s nice to know. Can I go now, Mr. Jones? I’ve got football practice at two o’clock. I need to get changed first.

- Yes, that’s all for now. Thanks, Jamie.
