Description:Students will use nearpod to learn how to transform functions. Nearpod is a free online platform that requires every student to be accountable for the questions asked in class, watch thisvideo to learn more about Nearpod.

Project outcomes:Students will be able to transform any parent function that has shifted vertically, horizontally, or has stretched both graphically and algebraically.

Target student grade level:10-12 Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry or Math Analysis

Time required:50 minutes

CA Content or Common Core State Standards addressed with this project:

grant.

Building Functions (F-BF3). Build new functions from existing functions 3. Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, k f(x), f(kx), and f(x + k) for specific values of k (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using technology.

Assessments:Nearpod has built in quizzes, so during the lesson students will be quizzed. Also, using the Draw-It feature in Nearpod, every student needs to respond to the question (formative assessment) on my of the Nearpod slides. While taking the quiz in Nearpod, the teacher gets instantaneous feedback and can give student feedback right away. For example, students are taking a 5 question quiz and everyone misses the first question, the teacher can intervene right away or re-teach the material that students struggle with. This not only saves the teacher time grading but also helps students learn in a 21st century classroom.

Materials: All students need internet access with a tablet, computer, laptop or cell phone.

Lessons:Include relevant worksheets, student work samples, presentation slides, and other related items: Students will walk the topics, take quizzes, use their calculator, work with partners and submit their responses directly to the teacher. For the entire lesson, please go to Nearpod.com and enter access code CHFRQ or click on this link to go to the lesson. When you are on the lesson, you are using as a student. (Note: You have 30 days to access lesson, if you are looking at this after March 19th please let me know so I can give you a new access code.) The teacher is the administrator and gets the results from the quizzes and the Draw-It features in real time and can modify/add/subtract from the lesson at any time. The teacher will also be able to circulate if students have not submitted responses. You are using this lesson in self-paced mode, in order to get the full feel of the lesson, it must be done in Live Mode.
